Power Generating Marathon

What if we leverage the runners community to generate energy ? What if we use a power generating shoes open-source technology to equip as most runners as we can, to let them create together a massive stock of energy ?

  • The idea is to create a power generating shoes open-source technology (partnership with shoe manufacturer like Nike could be done)
  • We equip the runners community
  • We create a new reflex action : each time you run, you create power. After your run, you upload the created energy on a wider runners energy bank (terminals to be installed in favorite running places)
  • We organise a massive event: the first power generating marathon, to scale the idea and make it visible by all the runners community (in different cities of the world, just like classical marathons or color run)
Inspirations  here.
Here, or here.

What community does this idea benefit and who are the main players?

Runners from all over the world.

How does your idea specifically help your community rapidly transition to renewables?

It's open-source technology. Everyone can build it's own shoes system. It's doable any time, anywhere.

What early, lightweight experiment can you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

Build a shoe prototype. Build a energy updloading terminal.

What skills, input or guidance are you keen to connect with from the OpenIDEO community to help you build out or refine your idea further?

Prototyping skills.

Please indicate which type of energy is most relevant to this post:

  • A type of energy not listed

This idea emerged from:

Neat idea, Mathieu! I really like your idea and inspirations. Have you considered contacting with SolePower team? They might be interested in partnership on your idea as that kind of marathon would help promote their idea as well. They might provide you with the shoes you need for the marathon.

Hi Mathieu,

This is a super creative and neat idea! I like that it works in two ways, people saving energy by not running on a treadmill and people converting their kinetic energy into electrical energy! I can totally see the ads now, "XX Marathon generated XX Kw of Energy!"

Are you thinking of working alongside a preexisting marathon (or marathons?) or are you thinking of creating your own event out of this? I saw that your above posted links were for walking, it'd be neat to market this technology to all the FitBiters and Garmin Vivofitters because then everyday could be a marathon day for them where they could examine, how much energy the saved by not taking XX public transportation and instead walking while simultaneously creating XX amount of energy.

Super cool idea! I'm looking forward to your prototypes!

Hey Nathalie, thanks for your comment. We should probably test the idea on a small local race, or with a small group of runners.

Hey Mathieu,

That is a great idea for your prototype! Perhaps you could "run" (hahahaha) multiple prototypes by finding a local running group to test your prototypes. That way, everyday they go for a group run you'd get results on efficiencies, problems etc. They could be your pilot eco-runners and it'd be neat for them to be able to say their group created XX amount of energy over XX Kms or XX days etc.

This is awesome way to use the crowds at marathons. So far, marathons have always had a social cause linked to them but this idea 'literally' uses marathons for social cause. I have seen some children wearing shoes that generated lights when they moved (A company named Action from India had such shoes). That technology could be a starting point for implementing this idea.

Thanks for your contribution Aditee, I'm going to check this technology.
