(Update:) Let's create addicts!

Using the psychology in behalf of creating a positive addictions to use renewable energy technologies. People are intended to get used to a things that give them pleasure, right? So let's create some pleasure by renewable energy and make them addict. It is a 6 step process including; 0. Feasibility ( Place, Actors & Funding ) 1. Install 2. Monitor 3. Reward 4. Uninstall 5. Monitor & Compare 6. Reinstall & Financial Model

I live in Turkey and I have been working on a project about energy consumption and efficiency in Turkey lately so I want to start with some information about Turkey (2013);

Energy Dependency: %75
2013 Energy import cost: $60000000
Energy usage in buildings: %35 

Approximate Energy Saving Potential in Buildings in Turkey;

So what?
It is an obvious fact that energy is crucial and primary sources are limited and energy savings on buildings has a great potential.
Target group of this idea is residential - non-residential buildings and end users.

Step 0) Preparing a feasibility report about energy needs, renewable energy sources and actors ( government policies, private sector, loval and international actors and funds)

Here are some of other related ideas:
Step1) Install the renewable technologies to buildings for free for a limited time usage. (between 3-6 months) 
User will think that no cost and no harm to do it because it is for free and temporary and there will be quite a little resistance to change.

Step 2) Let the users monitor how energy consumption, co2 emissions and water footprint, waste etc. change after installation compare to before. Also let them know how much money they are saving and how much they are helping to environment compare to neighbors, friends or the entire world etc.
" If you are not measuring it, you cannot manage it"
By doing it, we will make the advantages appear and create an awareness.

Here are some of other related ideas:

Step 3) Rewarding for the savings the user made within a month. People already can get paid for the excess renewable energy but rewarding them for every savings they made might me a great motivation as well.
This step may even include some kind of game like SimCity that you can simulate your consumption behaviors so you can make some estimations about how much savings you may have and once you do what kind of reward you will get.
This step also promotes monitoring step.

Some of rewarding system offers;
1) Getting money for every unit of savings
2) Getting point for every unit of savings so you can collect the points and do shoping with it
3) Getting point for every unit of savings and compete with the other people from neighborhood or even other countries.

Her are some of other related ideas;

Step 4) Uninstall the system at the end of the time limit.

Step 5) Let the users monitor how much difference renewable energy system made. Let them compare and make the difference visible.
Now they have their own information instead of some salesman person's words or advertisements and once they lose it, they will miss the pleasure of saving money, being helpful and important to environment and being better than others.

Once they want the system back, we need to offer them a tempting and an affordable payment system.

Step 6) Addition to tons of funds about renewable energy, Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) model can be used to develop a financial model.

According to global building stock database data, commercial, residential, and industrial buildings are responsible for 47% of global greenhouse gas emissions and 49% of the world’s energy consumption and at the end of these 6 step process, we will may have millions of addicts to help to reduce these numbers to nearly zero.

What distingueshes this idea from others is getting the changes back at the end of the period and letting user to miss and want it back like how happens in addictions!

This project by the Van Alen Institute and Imperial College London’s Sustainable Society Network may be of interest as you move forward with your research, albeit this is more generically 'built environment' focused:

Ecologies of Addiction is an interdisciplinary research initiative into the complex relationship between addictive behaviors and the physical environment of the city. Van Alen is collaborating on the first phase with Imperial College London’s Sustainable Society Network (SSN+), and has selected a research team based at King’s College London to investigate how a person’s vulnerability to addiction may be impacted by his or her environment.

“Addictions present a huge challenge, and we think that a better understanding of how they work spatially can shed light on many other aspects of well-being and how it is impacted by environment,” explained Van Alen’s Executive Director David van der Leer.

The team will apparently present their findings in May 2015 at a series of public events in London, and in June 2015 in New York City.
