(Updated with User Research) Greenfographic: Create and Compete through Environmental Infographics in Your Community

Greenfographic is a tool that gives your environmental efforts a score and creates infographics based on your efforts. Working with an energy consumption tracking app, such as SmarTraq, Greenfographic will import your energy consumption data, and create a telling and catching infographic. It maps important data about your environmental behaviors and it will help you to form better and more sustainable behaviors. (SmarTraq is similar to Fitbit in that it helps you track how much you have “worked out” for the environment, and Greenfographic will present your "workout" in a clear and creative way.)

If you want to know how much energy you have used and saved this week/month/year, Greenfographic will get your ideas and map out your usage with a score based on your consumption.
What else can you do with the infographics?

Greenfographic will have a social aspect.   You can share your green infographic on social media, and invite your friends to join in energy tracking.   In this way, Greenfographic will be able to access environmental data for your entire community, and show the overall ranking of each person’s environmental efforts.  It creates a green competition amongst community members, and motivates everyone to keep going green.

The main questions are:

1) WHAT TO VISUALIZE?

What are the main metrics we should use to evaluate the user's environmental efforts?   How can we build a good scoring formula? How can we make the infographic simple yet comprehensive?  Anything else?

According to Jeffrey from  PicMyEnergyMix, some statistics show that households are required to have 30% renewables out of total energy consumption before 2020. PicMyEnergyMix uses the percentages of different types of energy consumption, and it is so smart, simple and effective.  Besides this, what other metrics can be used?

What data about your environmental efforts do you want to see? What questions do you have about your everyday energy consumption and more specifically, about your renewable energy usage?

This idea is open to your comments and we look forward to your participation.  We are looking for the following types of OpenIDEOers:

a. Do you have research and articles on this topic that you would like to share?

b. Would you like to help with user/community research?

c. Do you have anything to ideas about localizing the green infographics according to different communities’ environmental characteristics?  In other words, how can we make the infographics more community-based?

Greenfographic will especially need to be:
a. Customized: users and communities will be able to set up their own questions and track data they want to track.

b. Adaptive: as time goes by, people may want to see something new and know something different about renewable energy/environmental outcomes.  How can Greenfographic change user-interaction to create a larger impact in the community?

c. Incentivizing:  What does the data/score mean financially, environmentally and socially?

 2) HOW TO VISUALIZE?

(This part is design and coding.) We would love feedback from environmental designers and coders.

a. With so many free infographic-making tools out there,  is it possible to get some templates and codes for free?

b. How can we organize Design-a-thons (like hack-athons) for designers to come together and design green infographics.

c. How can we use schools as drivers to design infographics.  (This will become great community activity itself as well as create original infographics too.)

d. Would Code for America/Design for Social Good want to help us?

 3) USER EXPERIENCE, ETC.

As an app/tool, Greenfographic needs to have good UX design, etc.

Updates:
Getting lots of inpiration from the Melbourne Team with the "Power Portal" idea, we come up with some simple questions for user research.  Please follow this link to fill out the form and help us improve this project:

Just wondering if you've thought about linking up with companies that can help you improve your score in the various areas? If they knew your location and what was poor about your score, and your budget to improve it, you could potentially target products of interest. This should be of mutual benefit to the user and the companies with environmentally friendly products.

Hello Tim, great feedback! Thanks a lot! I think that some tracking apps are doing this or will do this. I will recommend this idea which ran into final that you may be interested:

And maybe you can come up with great ideas to help Jeffrey prototype! Thanks again and have fun ideating!
