Projeto UERÊ is a model school and testing and development site for the UERÊ-MELLO Pedagogy - a unique methodology developed by Mrs. Yvonne Bezerra de Mello focusing on deblocking children having cognition problems due to constant violence. What is equally important, the methodology helps students in recovering their self-esteem and respect, often hindered by years of exposure to extreme poverty, social exclusion, trauma and other forms of violence.

Projeto UERÊ helps over 400 children and youth every year, from 6 to 16 years of age. Over the past 16 years we have successfully helped over 7.000 children and youth, with a 95% success rate in cognitive recovery. Being 100% free of charge for the kids and their families, we have, today, a waiting list of over 100 children.

Our methodology has been adopted as public policy to all public schools in Rio de Janeiro city, and throughout the past years we have received countless reports from teachers and principals saying how simple the processes introduced by Mrs Bezerra de Mello helped them substantially improve their daily work.

Besides having been implemented in the 151 “Schools of Tomorrow Project” in Rio de Janeiro (schools in very violent slums, controlled by drug dealers or militia, all over Rio de Janeiro city) and thus benefiting over 100.000 students and 8.000 teachers, also in Recife (in the Northeast) and Ilha do Marajó (in the North), UERÊ MELLO Methodology aim to reach even more national coverage by the use of an e-learning platform.

UERÊ came to my attention several years ago, and I can vouch for it's progress and how much the project has been refined over the last few years. The methodology is perfect for children who have come into contact with violence and war, as is the case in many of Rio's favelas, where the method was born. I hope the method succeeds in growing, so that many more children can be helped.
