EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA

Many researches have already shown that kids exposed to trauma and violence - be it because they live in countries at war or in conflictuous urban areas - have their cognitive skills severely compromised. Their ability to learn is hindered and the longer it takes to address these problems, the more difficult it becomes for that growing kid to learn, be able to have jobs in the future and so on.

The UERÊ-MELLO Pedagogy, tailored by me in the past 17 years and applied constantly in Projeto UERÊ model school and in low grader public schools around Brazil consists of a new way to teach curricular subjects by respecting individual biological concentration time, in each age group, by specifically 'warming up' in-class brain activity to improve learning skills.

In the six first years of a child, teaching starts with 35 minutes of specific exercises to make the synapsis and to restore the short memory, damaged by traumas and constant exposure to violence and abuse (six moments of orality). This technique is especially important to build the child’s pre-knowledge, which will create the links from the existing information and the new and without what one cannot learn properly.

WHO BENEFITS?

The idea of a different apBeneficiaries are children and youth in countries at war, violent slums around the world, or living under stressing circumstances.

The UERÊ-MELLO Pedagogy does not care about what topic is going to be thaught, the key is HOW the subject is going to be taught so that kids with cognitive difficulties and traumas can fully understand, learn and be prepared for the future.

PROTOTYPE

This idea and methodology have been in constant development over the past 17 years. We have a model school in Rio de Janeiro, inside one of the most violent slums here - Favela da Maré - where we test and enchance the method on a daily basis.

The very first step in the method is to empower the teachers that will deal with the kids on a daily basis. This empowerment can happen in two ways:

1. Through in place capacitation and courses, wihch would last aproximately 4 days, or 80 hours of training;

2. If doing it in place is not an option, the method can be passed on via an e-learning platform which is already up and running.

FEEDBACK

SKILL SHARE (optional)

We really need help with marketing efforts to upscale our method. We can share over 17 years of experiencing in successfully literating and reparing cognitive links in children living in the most violent slum in Rio de Janeiro.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF

We work in Brazil, but our method is applicable in any country in conflict and with urban violence present in the daily context of children. We are partners with Ashoka (fellows), Rio's Municipality, UNESCO and UNICEF - which listed Projeto UERÊ and it's method as a sucess case in their 2015 report.

IS THIS AN IDEA THAT YOU OR YOUR ORGANIZATION WOULD LIKE TO TAKE FORWARD?

  • Yes, and we are implementing/operating partners of UNICEF or UNHCR.
