EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA

Everybody knows something. And they can share that something with someone else. Many people in refugee camps are in a difficult place in their lives and it's difficult to continue living this way. However, Viktor Frankl, psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, found a way to survive the Holocaust and help many of his patients resist suicide. No suicidal patient of his ever committed suicide. Although, refugees might not be suicidal, they could still benefit from logotherapy by finding meaning in their lives. By using skillshare and teaching their knowledge and abilities to other refugees, each refugee can find meaning in their current situation. Furthermore, by learning from others in their camp, each refugee can learn valuable skills and perhaps trades. Along with finding a purpose to their being in a refugee camp by teaching others, they can find even more meaning by being more useful to those around them by continuing to learn more. By teaching and learning from others, people can find common interests and shared passions. They can find commonalities that span culture, language and religion. This can lead to further leadership in the camp and more involvement in it.

WHO BENEFITS?

This can benefit any adults in the camp who are finding it difficult to integrate themselves or find a way to get involved without being too "pushy." Anyone who wants to learn something can benefit by finding classes in camp to attend. The teachers of each class can also benefit by finding a reason to share what they already know.

PROTOTYPE

1. I would ask 20 (ideally more) people what they would want to learn and what they would be willing to teach. 2. I would match up the highest requested class and the teacher offering it (or as close as possible). 3. I would plan for at least 3 class sessions to test if people will actually attend and begin to assess what could be changed for the future.

FEEDBACK

I have not received any feedback, but I would start by asking anyone who works with refugee camps as they might notice what is needed most from an outside perspective and they would also know what refugees might need in order to live successfully outside the camp. Next, would be the refugees themselves because they would know what they want to learn, but might not be sure on what skills or knowledge they would need to be successful outside the camp, but they certainly know what things they would need/want to know for living in the camp.

SKILL SHARE (optional)

I would need the most help with getting the people within the camp to embrace the idea of sharing their skills/knowledge and thereby themselves and being open with others to make that successful. I have worked in special education for 10 years. While refugees might not have special education needs, I can see some similarities: trouble with language skills, outside distractions that interfere with education needs, personal difficulties impeding education.

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for sharing this. I am excited by the proposition because teaching and learning in a group can allow refugee children in embracing life skills that can help them reconnect with the world. I have also been working on developing a similar idea where children are made to work in a group and are guided through a tablet which they use as teaching aid and also to document their feelings as they do so, in the form of pictures and videos. Hi Ryan,

Thanks for this contribution. It's a really interesting concept and I couldn't agree more with the fact that everyone has something to offer and knowledge to impart and we should utilise this.

It's a Win-Win situation, people are learning and being empowered by teaching at the same time. Also, the resources needed are very low and therefore accessible to many groups of people - just need someone to facilitate!
