Digitizing Center for Educational Content (DC4EC) in Iraq and Kurdistan region of Iraq

A center for producing needed educational content as e-documents and multimedia for educating the diverse communities of IDPs and refugees.

DC4EC will produce or acquire enough educational content through digitizing the curriculum books and documents adopted by the Ministries of Education of Iraq and the Kurdistan region of Iraq and also record the school lectures to provide the camps with the bank of video lectures playable in scale for the children. The DC4EC is just the first phase of linked project activities which will lead to a comprehensive Emergency Education Program (EEP) that we are working on in Iraq. The EEP has four main phases including: 1- Content: Creating and acquiring adequate digital content and multimedia through DC4EC. 2- Transmission: Using ICT infrastructures to transmit the digitized educational content to the camps. 3- Presentation: The classrooms will be equipped with display screens and tablets provided by organizations such as UNHCR and Vodafone Foundation for presenting the digitized content. 4- Assessment and report on progression: We will hold regular assessments with the supervision of the Ministries of Education to monitor students’ performance and also will issue certificates which can potentially be one of the main incentives for students to take part actively in the program.

WHO BENEFITS?

The IDPs and refugees in Iraq and Kurdistan region would be our main community which benefit from this project. In addition, the experience and prototypes are going to be developed through this project can be later used as an example of e-learning platform for the national programs.

FEEDBACK

We have been suggested by the IDPs and refugee community leaders to develop educational program for them. As a good example, the Yazidi parents are asking us to teach their kids how to read and write because those kids who were kidnapped by the ISIS and could read and write where more able to provide the rescue team with their families’ telephone numbers and addresses to survive. The place and time flexibility of this program offers great opportunity for those students who have not been able to attend schools from the start of the war in 2003 in Iraq, whereby the will be able to start or continue their education without feeling reserved or isolated.

SKILL SHARE (optional)

We have enough human resources available in our community to deliver such projects but we need financial support from the local and international NGOs and organizations, so any help on securing funds for our current project would be greatly appreciated by us and our people. Our team members have experience in working within telecom, education and governmental sectors. They can help on launching any project in Iraq and Kurdistan region of Iraq which can increase the quality of life of people.

We are a large group of ambitious volunteers and paid teachers , Subject-Matter Experts, Instructional Designers, linguists , Multimedia Designers , and IT professionals from communities of Arabs, Kurdish, Yazidi and Turkmen people in Iraq and Kurdistan region of Iraq.

Starting educational projects become more challenging when the education cluster of Iraq is just 10% funded according to the Iraq Education Factsheet 2015, provided by Save the Children organization.

According to this report by Relief Web, only on Duhok province of Kurdistan region of Iraq we need more than 2000 teachers in the camps to be able to teach the children. We do not have such number of teachers available in our region and there is no other option than the remote and e-learning methods to tackle this big problem here.

We used this report to have a better understanding on how the funds and support flow. Educational supportive projects are part of national level priorities which still is lagging behind and we as group of volunteers would like to help push such projects forward and provide better life and future for our children.
