EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA

Dosoc app teaches entrepreneurial skills (online) and build a strong supportive international network as a base for an independent future for refugee. The application has two parts. the first is an educational part that teaches entrepreneurial skills and the second part is the live matchmaking between international experts and refugees that connects refugees in various places in the world to experts. The reason for this idea is that we believe refugees can bring along any kind of education from their past and still not always find work in his or her field when he or she enters a new place to live. But he or she can always set up a business of some kind. So having good skills in this field betters the chances of success. This will enlarge the chances of building up an independent and sustainable living in many different places (as it is unsure where his or her future settlement will be). Hence, we are challenging the status quo of saving refugees passively, the way we challenge the status quo is by empowering refugees to help themselves in a creative way by providing the basic knowledge and the support network to experiment with entrepreneurship.

WHO BENEFITS?

Internet and non internet young people within refugee communities would get basic education on start-up of the application; downloadable videos, infographs, lecture notes simple, accessible and easily applicable resources to provide basic knowledge. The application is accessible through various internet enabled devices as pc’s, laptops, tablets and smartphones.

PROTOTYPE

We tested a first rough prototype (paper/drawing) and we did a quick test on an entrepreneur’s festival and from there we made our first adjustment. We need to further refine this and test with experts and refugees. To find out what is the best format is our next step. Four persons of the original team (Selassie, Monique, Shary and Arne) will be staying involved; for now primarily Monique and Selassie as team leads. Following budget we will be able to further test and develop the app and even more importantly get users and get it adopted. For now we need a solid prototype.

FEEDBACK

We made our first adjustment on the feedback from the entrepreneur’s festival. However, the team lead for Africa (Selassie) asked one Liberia refugee in Ghana (from our target group) about what he could say about the app and the features of it as the team lead printed a colored pictured of the prototyped in PDF to him. The team lead for Africa did not ask him questions directly, but would say things like “and the feature? and benefits? to stimulate more feedback. The simplicity of the app was found to be appealing. He liked that the app connect him to an international support network to guide him set up his business. However, he was of the view that the app need to provide basic education. It is for this reason that the app will provide two function; education and matchmaking.

SKILL SHARE (optional)

We share partner with relevant institutions to provide downloaded and constant access to multimedia video tutorials. We share seek partnership with leading institutions including Kauffman foundation, Arizona state university and the online MOOC’s providers to provide us with tailored courses that meet the needs of our beneficiaries.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF

We are a group of seven (7) people from the Netherlands, France, Ghana and the United State. We got to know each other through the online course of NovoEd/ IDEO on Human Centered Design. Four persons of the original team (Monique, Selassie, Shary, Charlotte and Arne ) will be staying involved

IS THIS AN IDEA THAT YOU OR YOUR ORGANIZATION WOULD LIKE TO TAKE FORWARD?

  • Yes, I have implementation capacity and am interested in and able to make this idea real in my community.

PLEASE READ THIS TESTIMONY CAREFULLY. I AM USING THIS OPPORTUNITY TO TELL THE WORLD THAT, GREAT MOTHER IS A GIFTED SPELL CASTER. MY HUSBAND LEFT ME FOR NO REASON. I WAS NO LONGER MY SELF AND AT A TIME, I ATTEMPTED TO COMMIT SUICIDE. BUT THANK GOD I CAME ACROSS GREAT MOTHER ONLINE. I READ GOOD REVIEWS ABOUT HER GOOD WORK AND HOW USEFUL AND HELPFUL SHE HAS BEEN TO PEOPLE. I CONTACTED HER AND TOLD HER MY PROBLEM. SHE TOLD ME THAT MY WAN WILL COME BACK TO ME. SHE TOLD ME WHAT TO DO AND I DID IT AND TO MY GREAT SURPRISE MY HUSBAND CAME BACK JUST AS GREAT MOTHER SAID. I EVEN NOTICED THAT WHEN MY HUSBAND RETURNED, HE EVEN LOVE ME MORE. THIS IS NOT BRAIN WASHING BUT GREAT MOTHER OPENED UP HIS EYES TO SEE HOW MUCH LOVE I HAVE FOR HIM AND HOW MUCH LOVE WE OUGHT TO SHARE WITH EACH OTHER. CONTACT HER NOW ON HER EMAIL:

Hey guys! Thanks for sharing your idea! Have you considered how it might work for refugees that don't have access to smartphones? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Oh, and with respect to uploading the PDF, have you tried uploading it as an attachment rather than an image file? Let us know!

Photo of Selassie. K. Amenorhu
Team

Well, with respect to that, the team is made up of enterprenuers as well. The Team lead for Africa is in Ghana and has already done investigation at Bodumburam Refugee camp in Ghana Accra.
With the format, the team is currently working a step by step documents which will be given to refugee communities through institutions and partners. It actually a step by step with case scenario on Lean Startups. We are still researching and before 25th you will have access to every stuff including interviews format and lesson strategy. Thanks

Well, they made provisions for attachment in PDF files so we have done that and all the PDF files can be access. Thank you

Hello Open IDEO,
I am very much disappointed in myself for the community not doing anything enough to protect infant ideas. My Idea was adapted 'Connecting Refugees to Their Host Country and Capital via Online Entrepreneurship Training' in the competition. I reported him and he did wrote to me that yes he read our idea but he was building on that of coursera and you could see clearly that our idea was based on partnership with coursera. Currently, I know of Open University for organizing online training in Ghana through SWISS institution. Moreover, I know them in Ghana and they have nothing like a mobile app on smartphone in their core plan. I really want the matter to be look into otherwise it will prevent young people working on their ideas to stop making contributions to the competition as they know those who are already doing something and who have the capacity to hack other ideas will hack their ideas. Thanks

Hi Selassie,

I went back to find an old email that pointed to our intention for years now of developing/using a mobile app. I have done this so you don't feel jaded by the process. Please take a look at the link below which shows me reaching out to Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) over two years ago (pre the Coursera and edX mobile apps) asking for their help in developing an android app.

https://goo.gl/iOvQM4

Also, please have a look at this blog that I wrote for the World Economic Forum over a year ago:

https://agenda.weforum.org/2014/05/forum-africa-2014-education-revolution/

Notice this comment in it: "Free higher education from the best universities in the world, delivered from Takoradi in Ghana to Timbuktu in Mali, all on something as affordable as a smartphone."

I hope this evidence will put your bad feelings towards us and/or the process to rest.

Best regards,

John

Hello Selassie,
This is a good idea. It is good because most of refugees do try to do business and fail on their way to success due to the fact that they don’t have required knowledge for them to be successful.

Happy to connect you with the AMPION team who organize hackathons and a social venture incubator across 15 countries in Africa currently (operating since 2013). The West Africa bus goes through Ghana each year as well so in lieu of joining the bus you'll be able to meet everyone in Accra then. I feel there could be some interesting collaboration opportunities.

Have you also looked into the Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Program? http://tonyelumelufoundation.org/teep/ their cycle is closed this year but I encourage you to talk with them and maybe join next year, for the funding, mentorship, curriculum and network.

Selassie Amenorhu, We see how you project might mesh with ours, A Full Bowl. We guide people to links like yours by way of a useful kitchen bowl which encourages them to access a global cooperative site for sharing stories like yours. We agree with your concept of a generative community which emerges from the knowledge and power of the users themselves We will follow you and hope you have great success !

We can`t wait to dive into this Dosoc app. A lot of young men need advise as to how, when and where to put their ideas into reality. Introduction of this app will enable young and up coming entrepreneurs to get the right avenue where information could be source.

I highly commend this group for their good work towards this dream of re-empowering the less privileged especially the refugees who have been displaced from their home. This project must be supported by all means since it will go a long way to empower them economically and reintegrate them to normal societal life. Big ups!..

Wow this is and innovation that deserves to be applauded and supported in other For it to reach it's full potential. There are lots of Refugees around the world as a result of war. Many of such people were once students or business owners but as a result of war they have to leave all that behind and flee for dear life in addition to having lost the lives of love ones and family. I believe this project can enable them start from somewhere which is learning to acquire the necessary skills needed to become an entrepreneur, which in the future can help them fend for themselves and not depend solely on aides. Who knows they might go back home and build a beautiful country from the ruins of War.
