For our Nike Grinds submission, we want to recycle the Nike components and design them into sensory wall panels for hospitals across the nation and world. Sensory walls can “be very calming, allowing children to focus and attend to tasks or to relieve stress or anxiety.” Because the Nike Grinds have so much texture and can be manipulated to create cool textures they would be GREAT to incorporate into sensory panels. Another great component to this idea is we can use all of the Grinds in this idea, all the Grinds have specific textures and would lend themselves to a diverse range of sensory types!

Company / Organization Name (if applicable)

Sensory Nike Grinds

Which Nike Grind materials will your idea utilize?

  • Rubber Outsoles
  • Rubber Flashings
  • Rubber Granulate
  • EVA Foam Injection Scraps
  • EVA Foam Flashings
  • EVA Foam Sheets & Blocks
  • EVA Foam Components
  • Laminated EVA Foam
  • Laminated PU Foam
  • Mixed Apparel Textile
  • Mixed Footwear Textile
  • Footwear Fiber "Fluff"
  • Full Grain Leather Scraps
  • Split Leather Scraps Coated
  • Synthetic Leather

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

Every material has a unique texture and feel which is great because all of them can be recycled!! The materials will be used in different ways. The fabric can me sewn together and made into removable covers (that can be washed) for padding on walls and sensory objects on walls. The rubber and foam can be configured in different designs that allow for different tactile feelings. The rubber panels can be wiped down with a special wipe. The fluff can be used as the padding or for other another sensory station. We definitely will need to look more into the health protocols for sensory rooms in hospitals, I know that all objects need to be washed and wiped down in between patients. We will begin making the prototypes by first designing the panels/wall modules. We will take surveys/ ask questions about current sensory rooms and what is preferred. These will need to be interchangeable because of the fact that they need to be washed so frequently. Once the module design is complete, we will begin crafting the sensory panels with he resources given to us by Nike.

Please include a visual (can be either 2D or 3D) representation/prototype of your concept. (required)

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Research & Early Testing

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

Our target market is hospitals, day cares centers, grammar schools or even senior living facilities. These panels will be incorporated in their sensory rooms or can be portable to move from room to room! Sensory rooms are used to calm and help patients with anxiety or mental disorders.

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

We want to market to local schools and hospitals and then get larger from there! We definitely need the help from Nike for resources, mentorship and experience in order to make our dreams become a reality!

How is your idea innovative?

Sensory walls are already being used in hospitals BUT we will be saving the Earth along with help children! It is a great way to give back!

What inspired this idea?

Being a Love Your Melon president and ambassador as well as an athlete and designer wanting to make the world a better place!

Tell us about yourself and your team. What is your background and experience?

Hi Kayleigh McCabe ,

Great to see you in the Challenge! Could you please provide more content for the submission question, "How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?" How might you begin to turn the raw Nike Grind materials into your final product? What might that process look like step-by-step? How might you begin the prototyping process?

With the deadline fast-approaching at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time, please ensure all of your final updates are completed by then.

Excited to learn more!
