Nike makes superior performance wear made with the finest materials to provide the best possible experience. These investments -  design and material innovation, manufacturing excellence, material development and sourcing - warrants extended practical use.

This proposal is for a Nike apparel repair kit. If your clothing breaks, tears or scuffs, the kit will enable you to not only repair but also improve and personalise your garment with Grind materials using the Product Life Extension kit. The marks and patina gained through extended use become badges of pride, and when pushed too far, they can be repaired and improved for the wearer whether they are an extrovert, athlete or ethical consumer.

The practice of repair has become lost in recent years. Doorstep recycling has overshadowed product longevity. While recycling is a positive step in waste reduction, extending the 'in use' phase of products can have a far more significant impact on positive, sustainable development.

Repair and maintenance have an established place within the circular economy. Nike Grind materials present an opportunity to build a stronger and richer material narrative into their premium product ranges. The Grind materials, combined with a bespoke repair kit, can become a unique resource that re-invents the principles and practices of repair - using cast-off materials to prolong the life of products - promoting emotional durability and brand loyalty.

The Grind material range presents a unique opportunity to formulate a series of bespoke repair kits. Kits could range from simple patches that help repair tears or cuts to clothing; material composites that enable the user to reinforce, alter and adapt, footwear worn through robust use; or form new foam soles to replace over-compressed, collapsed and worn footbeds.

This process will help wearers build meaningful relationships with their clothing and provide further support when seeking to perform to their best ability.

Which Nike Grind materials will your idea utilize?

  • Rubber Outsoles
  • Rubber Flashings
  • Rubber Granulate
  • EVA Foam Injection Scraps
  • EVA Foam Flashings
  • EVA Foam Sheets & Blocks
  • EVA Foam Components
  • Laminated EVA Foam
  • Laminated PU Foam
  • Mixed Apparel Textile
  • Mixed Footwear Textile
  • Full Grain Leather Scraps
  • Synthetic Leather

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

The Grind Materials will be utilised as a range of premium apparel kits. The kits will be available for 'on-the-go' or advanced use and will enable the user to repair, adapt or personalise their clothing. The 'on the go' kits provide all the elements needed to make simple, easy and convenient changes and repairs to your clothing. These 'on the go' kits will allow individuals the ease and convenience of simple repairs to their gear while out on the move. The advanced kits provide everything needed to fulfil more specific repair requirements. These kits will provide bespoke shapes and constructions with the Grind materials to aid in the advanced repair requirements.

Please include a visual (can be either 2D or 3D) representation/prototype of your concept. (required)

This concept is made with the finest ingredients to provide the best possible experience. This material investment warrants a biscuit repair kit. If it breaks, it is not just repaired its improved!

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Research & Early Testing

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

The target markets for this proposal are the fashion conscious, the ethical consumer and the performance wearer - Anyone who wears their sports apparel and equipment to its limits.

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

The kits seek to promote the maximisation of material use, trust and brand loyalty (reliability), and cost-effectiveness. Key challenges to addressing these aims are detailed in the diagram below. A key challenge will be reconciling the technical specifications of Grind materials, repair processes and the design of apparel that supports repair and consumer modification. - promote a culture of customisation and repair through design, celebrity and sports ambassadors. - run clothing hackathons

How is your idea innovative?

This is a radical design proposition that reinvigorates repair by supporting individual expression, prolonging product life by presenting a robust image of durability while also promoting an alternative model of consumer engagement built on brand loyalty and cultural expression.

What inspired this idea?

The simple bicycle puncture repair kit. Also, the Worn Wear campaign by Patagonia.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea will support the growth of your concept.

Becoming a Top Idea for this challenge will help to support further research into repair and its related relationships with its stakeholders. This research and prototyping will be undertaken within my further studies of the Ma I am currently studying for.
