Produce on-demand to create less surplus material

You could design much more material-effectively on-demand and utilise smart-tech to a much higher extent to use larger percent of materials.

To produce less items that have no immediate buyer - could be potentially large risk.
To design products of lots of different materials and material types - could be wasteful, if the pieces of material needed to complete each item does not utilize the origin size as effectively.
To have a challenge wherein the participants is asked to use surplus waste material pieces and come up with creative use for them - is not actually the most effective solution.
Most efficient task would be to influence designers and makers and the manufacturers of your industrial machines to enhance the production lines and design lines in all possible ways, to strive for minimum percentage waste material during all of your research & design & prototyping & production & distribution chain.

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

Hopefully there will become less and less of your surplus waste material for each year.

Nike will benefit from less waste material and higher cost efficiency in purchasing less materials for the production and distribution.

It does not tackle how to use surplus waste - it strives to minimize and hopefully eliminate waste material as much as possible.
