Nike Supported Stadium Seat

This product is the ultimate stadium seat for anyone wishing to comfortably attend a sporting event. It consists of two main features, the first being a foam pad that is placed on top of the bleacher, bench, or seat. Attached to the pad is a back support belt. After sitting on the pad, the support belt can be placed at the lower back and straps run around each knee. By tightening the straps, the body is forced into correct posture and the back is supported. This removes stress from the lower back that is caused by slouching and other bad postures. This feature of our supported stadium seat is what makes it truly unique. The combination of the pad and posture belt create a comfortable, stress relieving seat that can be used for hours with no pain. Other stadium seats may be comfortable for a short period of time, but without support and correct posture, it will lead to back pain. There are also similar back support products that improve posture, but they lack the ability to make hard metal bleachers more comfortable. With our solution, anyone will be able to comfortably sit through even the longest sporting event without having to worry about irritating back pain. 

Considering that bleacher seats can be used over and over for several years, this product is an excellent candidate for keeping Nike grind materials in use for a very long time and thus keeping them out of landfills. Considering also the fact that this product has potential to be used around young athletes, it also provides an opportunity to teach these young athletes about the importance of reducing our overall footprint and encouraging them to live and think more sustainably.

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

The Nike Grind materials we plan to use include: rubber outsoles and flashings, rubber granulate, EVA foam sheets & blocks and components, laminated PU foam, mixed apparel textile, footwear fiber “fluff,” and synthetic leather. The rubber outsoles and flashings will be used on the bottom of our seat, acting as they do with shoes as a protective bottom layer that provides grip and prevents the seat from slipping off a bench. The rubber granulate, EVA foam sheets & blocks and components, and footwear fiber “fluff” will be used inside the bottom of the seat and the back to act as cushion. The laminated PU foam and the mixed apparel textile will be used on the outside of the bottom and backrest, keeping the cushion materials inside and together and allowing for any style choices we chose to make.The synthetic leather stips will be woven and sewn into the seat straps.

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

We hope that this product would be accessible to all sports fans who want more comfortable seating, however we would target sports fans with back and postural issues. From interviewing a number of people with back issues, we found that people with back issues commonly experience pain from the typical bench-style bleachers offered at most sports fields and gyms. This group would benefit from the comfort and back support that our design provides by being able to support their athletes pain-free.

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

Since there is already a market for stadium seating, we will sell our product in many of these locations, including in stores for athletic gear and online. The product could also be sold near stadiums, to high schools with sports fields, and to youth sports leagues for families of athletes to use. Another market we would like to bring our product to would be physical therapy seeing as our product has postural and orthopedic benefits, and our target audience are people who suffer from back issues. For scaling the manufacturing of this product, we will start with a small amount of equipment to produce things such as the injection molds for the interior structure of the seat bottom, and the weaving of the straps. The profits we get from the initial round of products will be used to purchase more equipment to transform the manufacturing process into full-scale production. Our product also has potential to be used in larger sports stadiums, as the cushion can be built into the seats.

How is your idea innovative?

Many bleacher seats widely sold merely provide a cushion for users to pad their seat. Our design, however, takes it a step further by providing back support as well. This design provides a simple, lightweight, and ergonomic solution for customers to have back support. The knee-strap system is different than conventional seat backs because it creates better posture and is able to transform a normal stadium bench padding into a full-fledged seat without being obtrusive.

What inspired this idea?

This idea was inspired by other products that attempt to make bleachers more comfortable along with products that improve posture to help people with back pain. Combining a cushioned seat with a back support belt will give comfort and pain relief to the many people who suffer with back problems.

We are a group of mechanical engineering students at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo who are focused on human-centered design. We each have experience participating as both athletes and fans at sporting events.

Becoming a top idea would allow our team to prototype and test our product using the actual Nike Grind materials. This would allow us to analyze the material performance and properties. We would then be able to bring this more realistic product to users and get critical feedback that we would use to adjust and improve this product.
