KSI Global Australia Pty Ltd has developed a Safety Roller Crash Barrier that will completely change the safety in roads.

It will prevent fatal injuries by absorbing shock energy and converting that energy into rotational energy.

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

Imagine the roller as a tiny punching bag with a hole in the middle and filled with Nike Grind materials. The Rubber and the EVA Foam will help absorbing collision energy. The skin not only will help protect Nike Grind Materials, but also will improve the night visibility on the road by having reflective areas.

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

Cyclist and runners are increasingly using roads. Most of the time in conditions that are not safe for them. This product will help reduce the fatalities for bikers, cyclists, and runners and will give them better conditions to drive in or practice their sport.

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

1rst Step. Scalable Prototype. Thanks to working in a Fablab I have at my disposal the tools needed to prototype. 2nd Step. Find a Partner: contact KSI. My proposal is based on a product that its already in the market. Their support might be needed for further developing the concept. The fact that Nike is behind the inspiration of this idea give me more reliability trying to find a partner. 3th Step. Testing the Product. Having found a partner can give me access to its resources and the chance to test the product in a suitable place. 4th Step. Reach the Customer. Ideally the customer will be the governments. Lots of roads kilometres are owned by them. I know that it’s a really challenging idea. In case that bringing it to a so large scale is not possible at the beginning, I will start it locally. The town hall where the FabLab is based, Sant Cugat del Vallès has always been opened to help us. I am sure they would be enthusiastic about implementing it in the city.

What inspired this idea?

Typical safety crash barriers are dangerous for motorbikes and cyclist and are responsible for a significant number of road deaths. This Innovation Challenge offers an opportunity to create a design through a sustainable approach that will solve this problem and ultimately save lives.

I am an Architect passionate about all aspects of design and how they may have an impact on the world.

Thanks to the resources offered from being selected as a "Top Idea" and my background focused on product design and CAD production techniques, I would be able to further develop the project and research designs, production techniques, as well as full-scale prototypes.

Hi Anna,
love this idea you proposed,
However, as you mentioned that current typical crash barriers are dangerous for those biker or cyclist, how do you ensure the safety of car drivers at the same time? Are there potential risks for applying this roller crash barrier?

Sorry for not answering before.
The proposal is based on a product that is already on the market and this product works as a car safety barrier. Theoretically, this ensures that it is also a good solution for car drivers. However, it is true that the fact that I am changing the rollers’ material means that it needs to be tested again. The principal risk of this change, it is that Nike grind is not strong enough to behave as the actual plastic rollers do.
