I live in Greece, a country which recently introduced a policy for not using plastic or paper bags in supermarkets. Just like the rest of the world a small amount of money has to be spent in order to buy reusable shopping bags made from other materials.

My idea was based on this concept of innovative thinking in regards to a better and safer future for our environment.

There will be three sizes of rubber bags which will be colour coded according to the abundance of each rubber colour (so no extra work has to be put in painting them the desirable colour, if possible). The sizes will be decided according to shoe box sizing, enough volume for apparel shopping, ball shopping etc.

It is up to the companies that want to integrate this bag to their business to decide what will be the amount of money charged for this reusable shopping bag or if it will be given out to the customers for free. However, as we live in a world were underdeveloped or developing countries need our help, I came up with the idea that we could offer the profit from the bags to such countries in order to encourage athletic activity and raise awareness for the importance of sports in every individual's life, especially in children's lives. Something which would also link with Nike's values.

Which Nike Grind materials will your idea utilize?

  • Rubber Outsoles
  • Rubber Flashings
  • Rubber Granulate
  • EVA Foam Injection Scraps
  • EVA Foam Flashings
  • EVA Foam Sheets & Blocks
  • EVA Foam Components
  • Laminated EVA Foam
  • Laminated PU Foam
  • Mixed Apparel Textile
  • Mixed Footwear Textile
  • Footwear Fiber "Fluff"
  • Full Grain Leather Scraps
  • Split Leather Scraps Coated
  • Synthetic Leather

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

So, materials such as Rubber Outsoles,Flashings,Granulate as well as EVA Foam Injection Scraps, Flashings,Sheets & Blocks,Components will be integrated in the main body of the bag. The use of different polymers will make sure that the bag is durable and able to carry a heavy load of objects, such as shoes and clothing. The bag handles will be manufactured by using any textile and leather scraps available. A mix of these two will ensure that the handle will be long lasting and will not break with extra weight.

Please include a visual (can be either 2D or 3D) representation/prototype of your concept. (required)

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Research & Early Testing

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

This product is mainly aimed towards companies that want to be environmentally friendly around the world. My future vision would be to expand to a wider target market including more firms and firms of greater scale and popularity. Also, the individuals and mainly the younger people in underdeveloped and developing countries will have the chance to experience how important sports are and maybe change their way of life.

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

In order to scale this idea, a couple of steps will have to be followed: firstly, the idea of this reusable innovative shopping bag will have to be introduced to the public by advertising and through promotion by the stores themselves. Furthermore, in order to make this idea more appealing to the people and make them willing to give a small amount of money to get this bag, nike should raise awareness for the underdeveloped and developing countries and start a campaign which will clearly portray the importance of physical activity in every individual's life as well as the beneficial aspects of these actions. The obstacles that could be faced include the public not accepting this new idea as well as not wanting or willing to afford these new bags. However we could overcome this obstacle by initiating the right campaign (celebrities, athletes) and addressing it to the right audience.

How is your idea innovative?

This plan is innovative as it includes pioneering ideas which combine new ways of setting out concepts and merges these concepts with socially desirable objectives such as environmental issues. Furthermore, the initiative of helping underdeveloped or developing countries and raising awareness for the importance of sports relates to the personality of Nike and reinforces its values.

What inspired this idea?

This idea was inspired by the continuous problems caused by pollution (plastic). In Greece, we face a great problem because of the plastic bags polluting the sea. Eliminating paper is one of the main global goals and through the usage of rubber bags instead of paper nike bags, this goal is achieved

Tell us about yourself and your team. What is your background and experience?

I am an IB1 (International Baccalaureate) student in Greece, who wants to study a course of design engineering as an undergraduate.

As someone who lives in a city that no longer uses plastic bags at all and where reusable bags are pretty much the only way to shop now, I think the more the better! I would love to see this actually come to play as reusable bags are certainly the future and why not have one that people will actually want to buy because people love the Nike brand so it makes the reusable bags that much more attractive to have a Nike one.
