Yoga is not just for the die- hard yogi any more. It has become a go to low impact activity for just about anyone. Yoga props are essential for comfort, maintaining good posture and pushing limits. With more than 30 million practising in the United States alone and growing rapidly, these props account for a significant carbon foot print. Nike Grind make for excellent alternative materials due to their superior quality and having been made with 'sport- in- mind'

The concept Nike Chakra (Chakra; circular in Sanskrit) draws an analogy between the circular economy it aims for and the cyclic energy focused on different parts of the body as visualised in yoga practice. Designed to use as much Grind materials as possible, the concept makes maximum use of it's wide palette.

People practice yoga in different settings at various times of the day. Keeping in mind that 'less is more' this compact ensemble gives the practitioner access to the essential props that can be carried around with ease.

Which Nike Grind materials will your idea utilize?

  • Rubber Outsoles
  • Rubber Flashings
  • Rubber Granulate
  • EVA Foam Injection Scraps
  • EVA Foam Flashings
  • EVA Foam Sheets & Blocks
  • EVA Foam Components
  • Laminated EVA Foam
  • Mixed Apparel Textile
  • Mixed Footwear Textile
  • Footwear Fiber "Fluff"

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

Please include a visual (can be either 2D or 3D) representation/prototype of your concept. (required)

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Research & Early Testing

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

While high-end sports brands have specialised collections for most popular sports, yoga seems to be a a hitherto untouched market gap. The brand will position itself in parallel with upper- middle range sporting goods. With a wide range of colour & texture, it is set to attract consumers from trendy & cool to classic & sophisticated across a wide age range.

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

The main idea is to form key collaborations either with Nike to build their own brand of Yoga equipment or a current manufacturer of yoga props. My concept will provide the ground base for the partner's new line of products.

How is your idea innovative?

The idea is innovative in the way it celebrates the value of recycled materials by tastefully integrating them in prominent positions of the design. While engaging in the positive nature of yoga practice the user can also feel positive that their carbon footprint is reduced, while not compromising the quality of the product. Manufacturing: Explore the possibility of thermo- forming laminated EVA so that the laminate will end up as one continuous layer on top - for the yoga mat

What inspired this idea?

My own yoga practice & my love for designing products for the circular economy inspired this idea. I discovered yoga while I was recovering from a back injury back in 2010 and I it has since helped me maintain balance of mind & body. I would love for more people to practice yoga!

Tell us about yourself and your team. What is your background and experience?

I am an Industrial Designer with 2 years of industry experience. Starting my masters at Arizona State this fall. Passionate about designing the next generation of consumer goods which are smarter and greener. Currently experimenting with mycellium.

In what city are you located?

In what country are you located?

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea will support the growth of your concept.

It would be pretty amazing to collaborate with Nike and IDEO get their input on developing the concept further. This will enable me experiment with Nike Grind and weigh in the pros and cons for the project's feasibility. IDEO's input will help me to enhance my design process and iterate upon this. I would also love to work with some of the other folks here at the forum who have better manufacturing experience for yoga props.
