Philosophy of high (re)use and high design: Reimagining space to transform as one's family grows - a play space today, a respite tomorrow

A platform that allows a family to custom-design an "away" space for kids to use for different styles of play (such as an indoor theater or mini playhouse), or a safe meditation space outdoors, the modular build materials provided on the platform is very similar to a Lego CAD system, which is used to virtually build Lego designs with ease and without physical constraints (such as costs and number and style of Lego bricks owned). After a design is built, if a user chooses to source these building blocks, they have a blueprint as to what materials are needed to fully build out their idea.

Which Nike Grind materials will your idea utilize?

  • EVA Foam Sheets & Blocks
  • Laminated EVA Foam
  • Mixed Apparel Textile
  • Mixed Footwear Textile
  • Full Grain Leather Scraps
  • Split Leather Scraps Coated
  • Synthetic Leather

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

EVA Foam Sheets & Blocks and Laminated EVA Foam for Textured Wall Panels Textiles and Synthetic Leather for canvasing window frames and rooftops, with a variety for textures Leather Scraps for straps that dress and tie-down rooftop and window canvasing

Please include a visual (can be either 2D or 3D) representation/prototype of your concept. (required)

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Research & Early Testing

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

Ideally, the initial target market is families - either in urban or suburban areas, that could benefit from pushing the physical constraints of the spaces they live in. Whether it's giving a designated play area for the kids indoors or outdoors, or even designating a separate space outdoors for themselves. As their needs change and grow, such as kids growing up or moving out, my aim is for the modular design of these buildings to adapt to new uses and changes in their lifestyles.

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

The platform would provide a build-to-order sales system, since each set of materials and modules are set to a families' specific design. Given the modular design and build, a family can add to it or change its design over time, if and as their needs change. The platform create a sales and delivery system that is demand-driven and allow for sourcing of unique materials while constraining the costs of it through standardizing building blocks, such as support structures, foam wall panels, and canvas materials and sizing. Since each order is custom but modularized, it would control for costs that usually mushroom for custom designs. Once a certain market size is established, other vendors and partnerships would be made to allow customers to accessorize their spaces. Initial accessories would be very basic and provided by us, such as special UV paints and stencils for creating wall designs and decorations. Obstacle: Family's willingness to (re)use and (re)purpose designs

How is your idea innovative?

The product underscores integration of spaces and use cases through good design. Instead of dividing tools and product into a narrow use case, as a space for adults or for kids, I would encourage through the servicing and supplying of this product an integration of the two by having families design these modular spaces together. The platform would provide different categories of spaces and help encourage them rethink and push notions of play areas, safe spaces and comfort zones for families.

What inspired this idea?

My favorite modular play system: Lego Architect Takaharu Tezuka: I think architecture is capable of changing this world, and people's lives.

Tell us about yourself and your team. What is your background and experience?

My background is in management science and engineering, with an emphasis in organizational design and collaboration. My experience includes advising small-sized firms to corporations in a variety of different industries.

In what city are you located?

Bay Area, California

In what country are you located?

What is your legal / organizational structure? (if applicable)

Sole Proprietor

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea will support the growth of your concept.

Using the materials to truly understand stability/durability in 2 different use cases - as a play space for kids and as a constructed space for adults to enjoy outdoors, while incorporating the personality and constraints of the nature of their space. Capital would also be used to contract a developer for a mock-up site, as I (instead) devote my time to materials testing/redesign while integrating that knowledge in the design platform with families that custom order their own "away" space
