Material experiment for acoustic panels

footwear textiles are processed to a mat of fibers that is formed by a vacuum press into a 3–D shape for high performance acoustic panels

the deep textile structure of footwear uppers hold a great potential for a sound absorbing material

if the composite material could the processed into a non-woven matrix, it could then be used as an interior textile with surprising qualities

the nylon and plastic parts in the fabric can be used to melt the mix in a vacuum press to a textile composite for acoustic panels

when processed in a vacuum press the non-woven matrix can be transformed from a 2–D fabric to 3–D panel, building a high performance, long-lasting product

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

the structure of the fabric and the material's mixture of thermoplastic and other fibers make the panel forming process in the vacuum press possible

even the production a hard acoustic panels can be part of a recycling system. my Unis' workshops host a vacuum press that can process formfleece, a material similar to the footwear material mix.

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

acoustic boards have an increasing value for work environments in offices and public spaces. open plan layouts are the prevalent work environment in offices, while a big part of work space design devotes to creating privacy and well-being. durable textiles with a sound absorbing function form a solution for the balance between open space and privacy.

How is your idea innovative?

a better use of earth's materials will help to save resources and can through good design benefit people's well-being e.g. through noise reduction

What inspired this idea?

the technology of vacuum pressed form fleece and the martial properties of the special fabric footwear

Tell us about yourself and your team. What is your background and experience?

I am an industrial design student with an excellent eye for detail as well as holism. I am eager to learn and I have a genuine interest in sustainability. In my work process I focus on material experiments and strong concepts.

How might you begin to turn the raw Nike Grind materials into your final product? What might that process look like step-by-step?
