Consisting of a single material, in contrast to the regular toothbrush, makes the GRINDbrush recyclable.
This is a factor that is often forgotten as we should replace our brushes at least every third month.

450 million toothbrushes are thrown away in the US every year.

Making this supernormal product recyclable will not only improve our well being but also our environments.
This design is about a small change in the material making a huge difference on our planet.

Which Nike Grind materials will your idea utilize?

  • Rubber Outsoles
  • Rubber Granulate

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

The rubber granulate will be melted and injected into a molding form. As students from my university have already built an injection machine, we are able to use it.

Please include a visual (can be either 2D or 3D) representation/prototype of your concept. (required)

Making the brush separatable from the handle, ensures a single component product and motivates the user to change it regularly. This is a first sketch of the GRINDbrush and a first visualization.

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Research & Early Testing

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

The target market of the GRINDbrush are people that live green and a healthy lifestyle. People with a consciousness of their body but also our planet, a combination that is getting more and more value nowadays.

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

There are so many products on the market. Let us try to improve them instead of creating constantly new ones.

How is your idea innovative?

This is what the regular toothbrush looks like. Being a material composite it can not be recycled.

What inspired this idea?

A visit to a recycling factory in East Germany.

Tell us about yourself and your team. What is your background and experience?

I am a passionate industrial design student with a conceptual mind and a critical eye. Material Experiments are strongly involved in my process. I am specializing in recycling plastic, especially working with the injection molding machine.

In what city are you located?

In what country are you located?

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea will support the growth of your concept.

Becoming a Top Idea would highly motivate me to work on and realize this design. I would love to improve our everyday products and to make a difference in the consciousness of the user. Working in cooperation with an established brand would give me an insight look into design processes that I am not able to see during my studies. I am happy to learn from an experienced team and willing to share ideas.
