Foam Fitted Stress Ball

The foam-fitted stress ball is tailor-made for individuals dealing with anxiety, depression, and ADHD.  It also serves as a substitute for self mutilation.  It differs from traditional stress balls due to its unique contoured shape.  Based on psychological research, therapists have found that stress balls which get between your fingers, cool the nervous system.  Our stress ball is proven to do this better than any other.

Which Nike Grind materials will your idea utilize?

  • Rubber Outsoles
  • Rubber Flashings
  • EVA Foam Sheets & Blocks
  • Laminated EVA Foam

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

Foam will be shaved down to fit a human hand, with grooves for fingers (gray interior). This would be made out of either laminated EVA foam or the foam sheets/blocks. A rubber sheet will then be wrapped around this foam ball and heated to seal the gap and form to the foam (green). These sheets would be made by melting down rubber flashings, or rubber outsoles. The multiple materials selected, instead of just one foam and one rubber, is because we are still experimenting with what is optimal. Exact materials will be known once we get experience with testing these materials.

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

Our target market is anyone who experiences stress. We especially want to help people with difficulty concentrating or require medical attention for their emotional ailments. The low cost and reusable material base will also allow these particular stress balls to be readily available to hospitals.

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

The therapeutic device could be sold or donated to hospitals, health centers, therapeutic firms, and suicide prevention centers. They could also be marketed to companies who want to put their logos on them.

How is your idea innovative?

Traditional stress balls have a tough time getting in between the fingers of users. According to an interview we had with a therapist, this is one of the most important aspects of a stress ball as it helps cool the nervous system. Our contoured shaped will make it easier to use the stress ball efectively

What inspired this idea?

Our inspiration comes from family members and friends who deal with stress on a daily basis.

Tell us about yourself and your team. What is your background and experience?

We are all second year mechanical engineering students at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. We have experience with machining and metal casting. Two of our members are leads on the Cal Poly Formula SAE Team and the Rose Float Team.

Becoming the top idea would both help to recycle materials and get stress balls to more people who would benefit from them.
