The artsy strap uses rubber granulates to create colourful and artful straps for wearables and watches. The granulates can be heat-treated/ultrasonic/laser-treated and formed into straps or they can be mixed with other synthetic compounds or virgin rubber and used to impart texture and colour to the straps.

They could also be 'entrapped' in a gelatinous material, so that they appear swimming in it.

The idea centres around playfulness and colour. It does not have a grand purpose other than to use waste materials as resources.

Which Nike Grind materials will your idea utilize?

  • Rubber Flashings
  • Rubber Granulate

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

The rubber granulates would either be used as the sole material (100%) or they would be used in conjunction with virgin-grade rubber, rubber flashings, or PU. They could be heat-treated or treated using lasers and ultrasonics to bind them together and create a unique surface and texture. The rubber granulates would need to be sorted out by colour and perhaps even put through a dry cleaning process (to get rid of dust and dirt). This would make them ready to be subject to the binding and forming processes. Once this is done and the straps are ready to be processes further, the surface treatment and texture creation would follow. To carry out this, any production facility that works with rubber and plastics at a very high level would be well suited. One can find such production facilities spread over Europe and Asia.

Please include a visual (can be either 2D or 3D) representation/prototype of your concept. (required)

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Research & Early Testing

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

The target market is that of wrist-gear. That includes watches, but also fitness bands. This product is more about individual expression and less about function, even though this too is present. It is for people and industries who wish to improve their consumption footprint and care about cutting down on waste. It is about making a bold and loud statement.

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

It is intened to work with premium watch and wearables manufacturers to get the design and patterns right. As also the surface qualities (production techniques). These would then be introduced into the market (after a thorough market feedback) and the number of manufacturers with whom one would work together would then be increased, so that the product finds takers among manufacturers.

How is your idea innovative?

The idea uses waste to create something of utility and artistic value simultaneously. It takes a mundane object like a strap and innovates around it using waste material. It transforms something having little worth into a product possessing high emotive properties and aesthetic values.

What inspired this idea?

There was no inspiration behind this idea. It is more a playful idea which was born while thinking of outlandish areas of applications.

Tell us about yourself and your team. What is your background and experience?

I am an engineer and work in the area of innovation techniques and the science behind it. I also create new ideas and concepts and from time to time design stuff myself.
