Nike Grind material would be used to created mini-ramps to help with the transition from one elevation to another where a temporary solution would work or where reconstruction or changing current layout is not possible.

Nike Grind material would be formed into speed bumps/humps and placed on roadways to trigger vehicles to slow down. They could also be wide enough to act as a crosswalk or narrow to just remind vehicles to slow down. Reflective material could be added to help drivers and pedestrians with visibility. All of these ramps, bumps and humps could be installed temporarily or permanently depending on the situation.

Nike Grind material would be used as fill material for traffic barriers, traffic drums, and crash guards used at highway abutments, roadway hazards and construction sites. The fill material will cushion the impact of vehicles when hit which would minimized injuries and damage to property.

Which Nike Grind materials will your idea utilize?

  • Rubber Outsoles
  • Rubber Flashings
  • Rubber Granulate
  • EVA Foam Injection Scraps
  • EVA Foam Sheets & Blocks
  • EVA Foam Components

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

For the ramps it would mostly be the rubber material which would need a binding agent so various shapes could be formed. The rubber material would also be ideal since many of these mini-ramps would be used for a transition from an outside space to an inside space. For the speed bumps/humps would again be made mostly of the rubber material and would need to combined with a binding agent be the idea to form the need shapes. The compressibility would need to be looked at since vehicle would be driving over these units. The foam and rubber granular material would be used “as is” for the fill material in traffic barriers, traffic drums, and crash guards. The could be a better solution to the water bladders and sand fill currently used as fill material for many barriers currently.

Please include a visual (can be either 2D or 3D) representation/prototype of your concept. (required)

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Research & Early Testing

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

For mini-ramps (Nike-amps!) - Anywhere that a ramp transition would make life easier than a stepped transition....senior centers, schools, community buildings, homes, older building that have an elevation change at their entrance/edit. For speed bumps/humps...near parks, schools....anywhere that traffic calming would help allow for safe passage. For barrels and cones....Federal Highway Department, local Departments of Public Works (DPW), construction contractors, park and recreation departments

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

For the ramps, speed bump/humps I would look for one of the vendors that already creates flooring material from Nike Grind and see if they would be willing to provide material for creating a mock-up. For the highway items... I would look for I would look for a local DPW that would not mind experimenting and trying out the material locally in a few traffic barrels. Another good marketplace may be a utility that is looking for an up-cycling opportunity.

How is your idea innovative?

It is a creative reuse of a material that would typically go to a landfill. As a Nike product it will have second life doing something totally different...outside the world of footwear but still being involved with motion and movement!

What inspired this idea?

Thinking of the cushion effect of rubber and foam...and thinking about something that would be useful and could benefit many. First I thought of using it as fill material for traffic barrels but as I think about it more I am seeing that as a consolidated rubber base material it could have many use.

Tell us about yourself and your team. What is your background and experience?

I have a BS in geology and work at an engineering firm doing data visualization. I am the creative type that has way too many hobbies. I like to re-purpose items especially if they can live on and be useful and avoid filling a landfill somewhere.

In what city are you located?

Medford, Massachusetts

In what country are you located?

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea will support the growth of your concept.

Becoming a Top Idea would show that my ideas has merit and is viable. It would be nice to see the material reused in a way that promotes safety and aids in motion and movement beyond its original life in the footwear world.
