ReTire - Broad Scale Tire R&D

The problem we notice with the tire industry is that a large range of tires are being manufactured daily and wear and tear is major problem which needs to be tackled. We intend to solve this by creating tires from recyclable materials like nike grinds.

We intend to develop tires for a large spectrum of uses ranging from commercial to military purposes. A large amount of nike grinds will be utilised for a project of this scale.

The specifications of material used for different products will vary according to the use of the consumer. Hence a substantive amount of contributive works needs to be done with tire manufactures. 

Both single and mixed material streams will be created into new, high value products manufactured and sold in large quantities.

The bussiness model will work using affordable and easily available raw materials(nike grinds) along with simple manufacturing tools of recycling and designing finished products(tires).

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

The tire will be developed into three different sections - 1. Inner core - The inner core will be softer and more flexible part of the tire and will be obtained by materials like EVA foam injection scraps, EVA foam flashings, EVA foam sheets & blocks, EVA foam components, Laminated EVA foam, Laminated PU foam mixed apparel textile and mixed footwear textile. 2. Tire-Makeup - Majority of the tire will be obtained using wisely used rubber based nike grinds like rubber Outsoles, rubber Flashings and rubber Granulates. 3. Outer Surface - The outer surface will be made up of hard and non-flexible leather based materials like full grain leather scraps, split leather scraps coated and synthetic leather. *The tread section of the tires will also require coloured mixed foam and footwear textile.

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

Our target consumers are heterogenous group - daily city commuters , to long range transportation vehicles , to heavy duty military used in rough terrains.

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

Initially we will develop the tires for heavy duty uses in the military and sell it to military contractors. Another market we want to enter early is the intercity transportation market, for which our tires will we developed for reliable use of long range transportation of goods. Since our products use relatively cheaper raw materials we intend to compete well with the existing players in the above two mentioned markets. Entering the daily city commuters market will be tougher since the market is already saturated with trust-worthy competition. Nevertheless we will intend to sell the public from an environmental point of view and even though initial sales will be slow, our shared goal of sustainable future should aid us in selling products globally.

How is your idea innovative?

Technical Domain : Using nike grinds for producing tires for a broad scale is unparalleled, and technically we will have to spend some time in developing tires according to consumer needs. Business Model : Entering markets which are not saturated initially and since our product is relatively affordable should give us an edge over our competition. Manufacturing Domain : We will be using state of the art manufacturing facilities in colleges, and their setup shouldn't be too expensive.

What inspired this idea?

On a personal level we aim to solve the problem of wear and tear in tires and the expense it pushes onto consumers(me being one too). I want to reduce that expense while ensuring reliability of the product too. So until frictionless tires are invented, a sustainable one should do.

Currently I'm working on this idea myself but i'll love to collaborate with like-minded people. I am a student currently pursuing engineering and love to work on ideas around sustainable development and it's real world applications.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea will support the growth of your concept.

Since this idea is a long way from development (at least in my country), i intend to bring about awareness and contribute to another small (yet effective) idea in a sustainable future. I don't seem to gain monetary profits out of this personally rather be a recognised in a ecosystem of innovators who share similar goals as mine. Becoming a top idea will aid us in scaling our idea into a large scale manufacturing reality.
