Any organization that has built, reformatted, or updated their working environment has the same goal in mind. How do you maximize employee health and productivity while executing our mission? Despite these goals, many workplaces achieve the same look and the same outcomes: drab, noisy, unproductive, and unhealthy work environments that fail to meet the needs of the employer or the employee.

Nike Works starts with the basics of workplace needs like standing mats, noise reducing baffles, textured walls that add color and break up noise, and insulated panels to reduce noise. These materials can be incorporated into retail environments, gyms, schools/universities, offices, and any other workplace looking to improve employee health and comfort.

Nike Grind materials could have a considerable impact on the aesthetic and environmental health utilizing the existing office elements, like:

Ceiling & Wall Baffles for Sound Dampening - panels could be constructed out of the following:

  • Mixed Apparel Textile: woven, stitched, or otherwise bound into panels
  • Mixed Footwear Textile: woven, stitched, or otherwise bound into panels
  • EVA Foam Injection Scraps and Flashings: woven, stitched, or otherwise bound into panels
  • Leather Scraps: woven, stitched, or otherwise bound into panels
  • Synthetic Leather Scraps: woven, stitched, or otherwise bound into panels

Standing Mats

  • Rubber Outsole Components & Flashing
  • Rubber Granulate

Cubicle Panel/Divider Exterior - could be given texture and color with the following:

  • Textured with Rubber Granulate
  • Textured with panelized Rubber Outsole Components and/or Rubber Flashings

Cubicle Panel/Divider Interior - hollow, resonate panels could be filled with the following:

  • EVA Foam Injection Scraps
  • EVA Foam Injection Flashings
  • EVA Foam Components
  • Laminated EVA Foam
  • Laminate PU Foam
  • Footwear Fiber “Fluff”

Accent Surfaces

  • Textured with Rubber Granulate
  • Textured with panelized Rubber Outsole Components and/or Rubber Flashings

Nike’s mission is "To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete* in the world." Where, according to Bill Bowerman, *"If you have a body, you are an athlete." Employee health and welfare is a recent focus and is fraught with underperforming employee welfare programs. Many of these programs are motivated by the real cost of employee productivity as well as the impact employee health has on insurance premiums, both multi-billion dollar problems. By directly addressing the workplace environment, Nike is leveraging its existing brand and offering real, applicable solutions in improving the athlete inside of every employee.

Employers want healthy, high-performing employees yet many of their workplaces fail to create this environment. Outside of these basic elements, there is a significant opportunity for ongoing, innovative expansion of existing workplace norms and design. Despite considerable research into what makes a safe, productive, and collaborative work environment there is no cohesive approach (or brand leadership) in this space. This gap, this dissonance, is where Nike Works comes in. Solving elements of workplace comfort, function, aesthetic, and employee health with existing byproduct.

The average career fills 20-50% of your meaningful adult life. Why can’t we spend that time as high-performers, delivering as an athlete in an environment that supports this?

Please include a visual (can be either 2D or 3D) representation/prototype of your concept. (required)

Nike Works whole office concept could be introduced into retail, office, gym, or school environments with products mixed and matched to create a cohesive, productive, and healthy work environment.

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Research & Early Testing

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

The target market for Nike Works is businesses and institution prioritizing employee productivity and a healthy work environment. These would be competitive workplaces attracting workforce through office environments, workplace rankings, and a dedication to a healthy workforce. These organization would place a high-value on employee health, productivity, and see their employees as athletes. Nike Works would have an aspirational role in Nike Retail, gyms, schools, and universities.

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

Nike Works could achieve scale through two routes. The first route is leveraging Nike's existing manufacturing capacity. The goal would be to capture and remanufacture as much byproduct on site as possible. Products like Standing Mats and Ceiling/Wall Baffles could be remanufactured at, or near, existing production facilities and delivered via existing supply chains. The second route to scale is a strategic partnership(s) with a leading office furniture manufacturer like Steelcase or Herman Miller. Nike would license the elements it has identified to create a Nike Works workplace and cobrand its offerings with brands meeting the mission/vision of the Nike Works program. Products like Cubicle Panel/Divider Exterior, Cubicle Panel/Divider Interior, and Accent Surfaces would be co-manufactured and distributed with partners. Nike would retain the vision and ongoing thought leadership of Nike Works as well as its implementation in the workplace.

How is your idea innovative?

Despite an ongoing quest to improve and revitalize the office environment, the outcomes remain in the Dilbert days of office design. The bulk of office space innovation is focused on space-efficiency, flexibility/reusability of materials, and most damningly, unproven assumptions around what the modern worker needs. Nike Works is innovative in that it addresses the basic needs of the employee environment while introducing the aspiration of every employee as an athlete.

What inspired this idea?

Like at least 50% of the workforce, I am an introvert. I do my best work without distraction. I also love beautiful, vibrant, and healthy work environments. I couldn't do what I do without a strong team. Despite all of this, I still work in many drab, noisy, work environments ripe for improvement.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea will support the growth of your concept.

Becoming a Top Idea will provide Nike Works with the resources necessary to assess and strategize a workplace level launch. A pilot initiative would explore the most readily manufactured Nike Works products, their application and performance in the workplace, and the best pathways to scale. Nike Works could positively redirect a significant amount of Nike byproduct in a way that fundamentally changes the workplace, regardless of where work occurs.
