Nike Rebound is series of support braces for sprains and strains. Using the unique shapes left over from die-cutting innersoles, the support braces elegantly wrap around the wrist, ankle, elbow and knee. An adjustable fastening provides a perfect fit, and allows for changes in the joint as swelling decreases.

The braces can be produced by adding a few extra cuts to the die-cutting process, and then applying the fastenings. No extraneous manufacture is needed.

Which Nike Grind materials will your idea utilize?

  • Rubber Granulate
  • Laminated EVA Foam
  • Laminated PU Foam
  • Mixed Apparel Textile
  • Mixed Footwear Textile

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

Rubber granulate has the opportunity to be remoulded into the fastenings. However, if this is not the case, then a mono material solution could be made from recycled aluminium. The main body of the brace is made from any of the foams and textiles above that are leftovers from the sole-cutting process. The leftovers are cut and twisted into shape. After use, the retailer offers a take-back scheme where loyalty points are earned. This incentivises the customer to return the used product, so it can be laundered and re-sold. Or the materials can be separated. At this point, the fastenings can be reused and the foam/textiles shredded to create ‘fibre fluff’.

Please include a visual (can be either 2D or 3D) representation/prototype of your concept. (required)

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Research & Early Testing

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

Sportspeople who have gained a minor injury (and may do so often) and wish to recover quickly without fronting the cost of medical-looking braces. Nike Rebound offers a lower cost solution that stands out from the norm.

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

Support braces are just the first line of products that can be created to get Sportspeople back into the field of sport. Depending on Nike’s appetite for venturing into medical products, this new sub-brand within Nike could step into a world that will not only help to increase the number of consumers getting back into sport but create a new range of products that both protect and nurture an athletes’ body.

How is your idea innovative?

The innovation stems from the simplicity of the idea. We assessed the material potential of an off-cut that has never been used before.

What inspired this idea?

Our team met at the challenge event, and through some quick fire brainstorming and prototyping we created Nike Rebound. The main inspiration was playing with the Grind materials.
