Consumer products waste is a big deal. In fact, more than 76 million tons of packaging materials entered the waste stream in 2014 in the US alone, accounting for almost 30% of all municipal solid waste (MSW) generated according to the EPA. What if we could help be part of the solution rather than part of the problem?

JUST STORE IT turns shoebox packaging waste into valuable and collectible storage using GRIND materials to create visually-appealing and environmentally-friendly displays in homes and stores.

Our solution also includes a program for returning unused shoeboxes to retailers for re-use. JUST STORE IT is a comprehensive solution to the packaging waste problem including:

1) Manufacturing and distribution of clips/ fasteners made of GRIND materials to transform shoeboxes into modular storage.

2) Manufacturing and distribution of limited-edition shoeboxes made completely of GRIND material (similar to the Herman Miller chair) that form a larger image when stacked together.

3) Opportunity to sell clips/ fasteners or provide as purchasing incentive.

4) Use of modular storage in retail stores and customer's homes.

5) Program to incentivize return of boxes and clips/ fasteners when no longer in use.

Which Nike Grind materials will your idea utilize?

  • Rubber Outsoles
  • Rubber Flashings
  • Rubber Granulate
  • Full Grain Leather Scraps
  • Split Leather Scraps Coated
  • Synthetic Leather

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

The clips/ fasteners will incorporate GRIND material. Special edition boxes will be manufactured from GRIND material.

Please include a visual (can be either 2D or 3D) representation/prototype of your concept. (required)

The mural image displays the concept of how shoeboxes will be printed that fit together to form a customizable image of varying size. The shoebox image displays a prototype of the clip/ fastener.

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Prototyping

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

Customers (sneakerheads) will benefit from the product. Other retailers/ products can also purchase the product and benefit from the idea.

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

The program can be piloted in limited stores for limited shoe lines (limited release), and steadily expand by market/ line. There is the potential to sell the clips to make to program available to any launch products at any retailers.

How is your idea innovative?

We took a usual object that many take for granted (the shoebox) and used it to re-think the way we consume product packaging. The idea incorporates a change to the standard package, saves shoeboxes while reusing recycled materials, prevents waste of the shoe box, and can change consumer behavior to encourage re-use.

What inspired this idea?

We were inspired by the immense problem of packaging waste, along with the trend to use re-usable shopping bags, the need to reduce waste, and the iconic NIKE branding.

Tell us about yourself and your team. What is your background and experience?

We are a group of consultants that love solving complex problems for clients.

In what city are you located?

Portland, OR.

In what country are you located?

USA.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea will support the growth of your concept.

We will be able to further develop the prototype and approach retailers with the ability to pilot the display capability of JUST STORE IT within their stores.
