The wall panels/tiles add color and texture to spaces using a safe and non-toxic material. The panels also provide acoustic benefits. There will be significant cost savings that are transferred to the end costumer, when compared to the same products using virgin material. The colorful panels/tiles provide a unique visual aesthetic that go beyond superficial beauty and communicate social and economic responsibility. The panels/tiles are visibly identified by a specific shoe model where the grind came from.  The new slogan “If you have Nike Shoes, you are part of the change” will be a coherent extension of ”If you have a body, you are an athlete”, creating real emotional ties to buying NIKE products.

Which Nike Grind materials will your idea utilize?

  • Rubber Outsoles
  • Rubber Flashings
  • Rubber Granulate
  • Mixed Apparel Textile
  • Mixed Footwear Textile
  • Full Grain Leather Scraps
  • Split Leather Scraps Coated
  • Synthetic Leather

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

There is a waste offset program that will be a part of the sale of the product to engage customers and create ownership of the waste management concept

Please include a visual (can be either 2D or 3D) representation/prototype of your concept. (required)

The grind materials will be pressed with biodegradable adhesives to create modular shapes that can be used as colorful wall tiles in various industries, such as retail, hospitality and schools.

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Prototyping

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

B2B: Pre-fab home manufacturers, interior designers, retail and hospitality spaces and schools. B2C: The ‘smart’ urban, eco- conscious families; first home buyer and individuals remodeling homes they own.

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

Partnerships with businesses that share the same ethos and who might be able to use these the pressed material as their raw material, such as Patagonia, will reinforce the brand. Reaching out further to peripheral businesses, like furniture brands, will expand the business. Establishing a trade-in program with the customers to keep the recycling chain alive, not just with fresh grind, but with old product as well will keep the business loop moving. The customers will get credit towards future purchases by participating in product return, therefore, providing more control over the product lifecycle. The evaluation of the old product will also reveal successes and failures and provide insight on re-design. Adding programs such as, educational and craft, will allow the product to expand to new markets.

How is your idea innovative?

The panels/tiles can replace wall treatments that are made from virgin material, while adding insulation and acoustic benefits. They are versatile and their use can expand to other industries, such as furniture and fashion. They can be molded in various shapes and sizes and therefore, customized to meet the needs of various industries.

What inspired this idea?

I have just finished a job designing a free-standing separation wall unit that needed acoustic sound proofing as well. Various materials had to be used to achieve the required function and the style, which can all be replaced by the grind material.

Tell us about yourself and your team. What is your background and experience?

I am an industrial designer, with experience in the automotive and the consumer goods industry. I have also worked for NGO's in countries such as Africa and Haiti, with limited resources. I owned a small serve based business for 5 years.

In what city are you located?

Los angeles

In what country are you located?

What is your legal / organizational structure? (if applicable)

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea will support the growth of your concept.

The resources will be available to create prototypes to test the current idea for panels for wall tiles and also, to expand the product to other prototypes with specific specs for other industries.
