This Circular Meditation Cushion is designed for meditators and the growing interest in meditation for athletes (think Nike), among many others that find the practice important to being and feeling well.

Reuse & Recycle: The design itself is circular, which represents a core principle; it can be sent back to create a fresh cushion, or utilized in other products that incorporate Nike Grind materials. The initial product is not the end, it is the start of a multi-cycle journey of providing benefit as a product. It is for the mindful consumer, the type of individual that wants to do their best when making a purchase, whatever it may be.

The cushion is crafted almost entirely of raw Nike Grind materials, with little to zero manipulation or need for further manufacturing. The only material that needs to be potentially sourced outside of the Grind materials is the thread (which will be sourced from 100% recycled polyester).

This product utilizes the following Nike Grind materials:

  • Mixed Apparel Textile
  • Footwear Fiber "Fluff"
  • Rubber Granulate
  • Laminated EVA Foam  (potentially)
  • Laminated PU Foam (potentially)

Individuality & Connectedness: Each cushion is unique, just like the individual that sits upon it. It is also 100% recycled, reused, or reclaimed, representing the connectedness of the environment we all inhabit. The product is the story.

The Nike Connection: With the understanding that this proposal is to create a business separate from Nike, there is great potential for Nike to be in the meditation 'space'. Considering the recent pairing of the Headspace meditation app and Nike, along with Michael Martin's (Global Head of Digital Products) recognition of the importance of Mindfulness in athletes, it becomes relatively clear where this can all go: all sports Nike supports and all individuals that are aligned with the brand.

Big thank you to my mother-in-law who sewed the cushion prototype!

Which Nike Grind materials will your idea utilize?

  • Rubber Granulate
  • EVA Foam Components
  • Laminated PU Foam
  • Mixed Apparel Textile
  • Footwear Fiber "Fluff"

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

The Mixed Apparel Textile will likely be utilized to create both the inner cushion lining and the external (and removable) cushion cover. These elements are sewed together to create a cohesive and enclosed cushion. A combination of the Footwear Fiber "Fluff" and potentially the Rubber Granulate will be utilized for the internal element of the cushion. The cushion needs to be relatively firm to sit properly for meditation practice. The combination of a more "fluffy" material and the Rubber Granulate will likely provide the firmness and desired density of the sitting area. There is also the possibility of utilizing the Mixed Apparel Textile for the internal elements as well, this will need to be further prototyped to get a feel for the combinatory effect of the Nike Grind materials listed here. Depending upon the density, Laminated PU Foam may also be incorporated. In the current prototype I used a combination of t-shirt scraps, lint (as a means of extrapolating the density of the "fluff", and reused synthetic pillow fluff.

Please include a visual (can be either 2D or 3D) representation/prototype of your concept. (required)

The attached image is a physical prototype created for this OpenIdeo Challenge.

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Research & Early Testing
  • Prototyping

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

Individuals that use meditation apps (Headspace, etc), participate in meditation sessions, and those that practice yoga at home all may benefit. Athletic and mindfulness programs at the collegiate level (universities are looking to reduce environmental impact), and professional athletes as well (Nike connections).

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

1) Connect with meditation app developers to promote the product with an affiliate business model. There are millions of individuals that use audio apps for meditating and practice at home, an ideal market for this product. 2) MBSR (Mindfullness Based Stress Reduction) programs across the US. I've participated in two courses and have connections with faculty at the integrative studies center at UCSD. 3) Podcast sponsorships/affiliates. There are a number of podcasts about mindfulness and meditation, these are great audiences to provide information about a 100% recycled or reused product.

How is your idea innovative?

A primary innovation in the idea is the materials used to create the meditation cushion. By utilizing the clothing textiles, fluff, and potentially rubber materials, this will allow for a 100% recycled or reused meditation cushion. It may also greatly reduce the cost of production will may result in a more affordable price point. Another important element is the circular business proposal, all cushions can be returned to become another cushion, or sent to a company that utilizes Nike Grind.

What inspired this idea?

I meditate everyday and need a meditation cushion. Also, I've noticed that several (Nike) athletes are meditating (along with a general growing interest in the US and elsewhere). It seems like it's a good fit for Nike, Grind materials, and the ethos of mindful consumers.

Tell us about yourself and your team. What is your background and experience?

I'm currently Director of Business & Partnerships at Autentico Adventures, an experiential learning company located in Costa Rica. Previously, I was Director of Marketing & Community at Pixite, an award-winning app development company.

In what city are you located?

Stuart, FL

In what country are you located?

USA

What is your legal / organizational structure? (if applicable)

Sole Proprietor (currently)

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea will support the growth of your concept.

I believe it will amplify opportunities to make this a great product experience for potentially millions of individuals around the world. In collaboration with the OpenIdeo and Nike Grind teams, I imagine it will bring manufacturing protocols and helpful directives in growing a conscious, global product line.
