Boxing light

Use your own boxing energy to light up the night with these boxing bags created with Nike grind and leftover kite material.

The boxing light combines ripstop nylon fabric, a left over material from the kite-surfing industry (the fastest growing water sports) and Nike grind to create an innovative product for the newest fitness craze; boxing. According to the latest market study released by Technavio, the Global boxing equipment market is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 5% during the period 2017-2021.

Boxing bags are already filled with textile waste. Our business model however reaches all corners of the system. We aim to make a cool, innovative product for early adapters who are likely to pay more for a quality product and social status. The support of NIKE would give us the marketing opportunity to reach these customers. Besides designing the coolest transparent boxing bag, we will develop a special feature/ add-on that allows our boxing bags to convert the users boxing energy into a light source - directing technology enthusiast. When an early adapter buys a boxing bag for themselves, they sponsor a bag to be distributed by one of our charitable partners for youth empowerment through sports. The idea is that this sponsored bag is distributed close to the area where the waste is created (we assume that this is in a third world country).

Besides the product we will develop a platform that keeps track of where the sold products are located. Through our platform users can find a community and share or rent their product with other boxers in their area. Also they can find on this platform repair facilities in their area so that it is easier to have the bags fixed.

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

The Nike Grind materials will be fully visible as this is also an aspect of the marketing and the transparency concept of the business. We will be able to re-purpose large quantities of the Nike Grind materials without the need for much processing! Our 'give energy, get energy program' will provide us with extra opportunity to re-purpose as much materials as possible.

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

Our ideal client is Anna (31) who chooses to spend her money politically, purchasing from companies that donate some of their profits to causes she believes in. She works for an investment bank and lives in Amsterdam. On insta she follows Gigi Hadid who inspired her to start boxing 2 years ago. Our boxing bag hangs in her garage so she can make the most out of her fitness time, she shares it with two neighboring friends. Her sponsored bag is used by teens at a poor school in Bihar, India.

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

After further product development with user testing/validation, we will source a manufacturing partner for the boxing bags in both a developing country, close to where the waste is generated, as well as one in a European country, close to our paying customers. We aim to work with an NGO that will distribute the sponsored boxing bags to organizations that invest in youth empowerment through sports in third world countries. Our European brand partners will be the first to expand across Europe. We will work with pavegen.com to design the way we can best integrate their innovative energy generating technique into the boxing bag. As we foresee that this element might be too expensive for our business model we look at the light element as a feature to generate attention for the product and the concept of passing on energy. This system would then be an add-on that is only included in a special edition of the boxing bags or possible to purchase later to upgrade your boxing bag.

Tell us about yourself and your team. What is your background and experience?

Born and raised in Curacao; studied (Design Academy Eindhoven) and started my professional life (droog) in the Netherlands. I now work remotely with my (own) studio in Amsterdam as well as on local CE related projects in Rio.
