RECOVER is a modular seat that can be paired with a frame to be used as a chair, or fitted in sequence to a beam structure to create public seating. RECOVER can also replace existing seating that has been damaged. A simple bracket can be designed according the intended use.

Which Nike Grind materials will your idea utilize?

  • Rubber Outsoles
  • Rubber Flashings
  • Rubber Granulate
  • EVA Foam Injection Scraps
  • EVA Foam Flashings
  • EVA Foam Sheets & Blocks
  • EVA Foam Components
  • Laminated EVA Foam
  • Laminated PU Foam
  • Mixed Apparel Textile
  • Mixed Footwear Textile
  • Footwear Fiber "Fluff"
  • Full Grain Leather Scraps
  • Split Leather Scraps Coated
  • Synthetic Leather

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

The main material of the design proposed is EVA foam. We need to shred down the following materials into smaller pieces and re-process them into EVA sheet that will be die-cut, thermoformed. EVA Foam Injection Scraps EVA Foam Flashing EVA Foam Sheets & Blocks EVA Foam Components The seat structure is made of a sheet metal assembly that will be sandwiched between newly created EVA sheets and some cushioning bags filled with others Nike Ground materials. The first thermoformed EVA panel would be stitched to the back die-cut EVA panel all around the perimeter of the chair. The cushioning bags can be filled with any of these materials depending on availability (without mixing them) : Rubber Outsoles Rubber Flashings Rubber Granulate Laminated EVA Foam Laminated PU Foam Mixed Apparel Textile Mixed Footwear Textile Footwear Fiber "Fluff"Full Grain Leather Scraps Split Leather Scraps Coated Synthetic Leather

Please include a visual (can be either 2D or 3D) representation/prototype of your concept. (required)

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Research & Early Testing

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

Private/Public organizations that require seats for spaces/facilities. Furniture manufacturers (some furniture companies already have existing molds for EVA foam parts, for example, office chair armrests).

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

Seek partnerships with existing furniture companies with mass production processes already in place. We envision the main obstacle to overcome being the multicolor nature of the materials. It is a fun approach for kids and some public spaces, but may not be suitable for more serious workplaces or commercial spaces that require specific brand colours. If there is way to control the color of the scrap to a certain degree, such as darker colors together, that could help in broadening the prospective buyer base.

How is your idea innovative?

EVA foam has not been used in seating to this degree before to our knowledge. The material presents numerous advantages for sitting; it is lightweight, can be molded into complex forms to create appealing designs, is non-toxic, has a soft touch finish, is waterproof and resistant to cracking, and can be stitched together.

What inspired this idea?

One half of our team was designing a sunglass case made of EVA and was intrigued by the potential of this material with the thermoform process. Then we heard about this competition and the idea of a seat came to mind.

Tell us about yourself and your team. What is your background and experience?

Kevin Meric is an industrial designer with 6+ years experience designing consumer electronics, furniture and eyewear. Anthony Furia is the founder and principal designer at Furia, a branding and design firm in Toronto, Canada.

In what city are you located?

TORONTO

In what country are you located?

CANADA

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea will support the growth of your concept.

As a substantial initial investment is required for tooling and building the prototype at scale 1, becoming a Top Idea will help RECOVER be prototyped to aid in pitching to potential manufacturers.

Hi Anthony,

Your idea is very well structured and I think you should have a big advantage because your team has already designed a product made of EVA. Have you had any negative experiences with the material at all?
Especially the size of the target market has convinced me of your idea since the list of potential customers is virtually boundless. Combined with the powerful CSR strategies of multinational companies, your concept is very likely to thrive.

Good luck and all the best for the future!

Hi Anthony!

Great idea to recycle the EVA Foam in this way, and I really like the simplicity of the design, I think it will appeal to many people. And think big! Maybe IKEA is interested, as they aim for these kind of products. Furtermore I was wondering if the EVA Foam could be recycled another time after the chair is replaced?
Cheers,

Leon

Hi Leon, yes the EVA is designed to be re-shredded and re-formed to create new chairs. A partnership with IKEA would be great, their reach and volume would provide real impact for circular economy manufacturing.

Hi Anthony, thanks for the reply. All the best for the coming period!

Hi Anthony, your idea is terrific! But I have some questions about the product details. considering the nature of grind materials used, is there any possible test measures or quality monitoring processes that you and your team would use to keep the product reliable enough for the market? Also, is there any product portfolio strategies like providing different colour and size options to different customers?
Thanks!

Hi Chang, thanks for your comment. We haven't gotten to the stage of planning production at scale as of yet, but yes, durability would be an essential quality consideration given the product would be exposed to the elements for public seating configurations. Colour, size, and branding opportunities would be specific to client need.

Hi Anthony,
the project sounds really interesting and I really enjoyed reading the proposal. Are you only selling single chairs or do you wanna expand the product portfolio? According to this, we have an interesting startup in Australia, called "Replas", which is focusing on manufacturing recycled plastic, such as park benches. You can have a look by clicking on the following link:

Cheers,
Daniel

Hi Daniel, yes we would be looking to expand the product line in the future. Thanks for providing the link to Replas, it's great to see companies like this extending the life-cycle of materials, I hope that one day all companies will think in this way.

Hi, Anthony!
I think that the idea is great! Did you consider to sell the product as a normal seat (like a chair for example) or it is just for public seats? I would like to know if you have an estimation of the selling price of each modular seat.
Thanks!
Nestor

Hi Nestor, many thanks for your comment! Yes, we would very much like to branch out into various seating products in future, including standalone chairs. No final retail price points have been determined at this time.

Is that possible to make a EVA foam sofa? It can be part of the outdoor furniture. That would be very interesting. The business model above is good, for these need research part, you can do a online survey, better ask different age groups to present what they think.

Thanks for the input Nora, good ideas!

Very simple and clear explanation. Like this idea! From my experience in daily life, chair has high depreciation. As long as ROCOVER can provide comfortable seats, it has huge business opportunity!

Thanks Serena, we think so too!

Maybe there are cheaper/easier ways to do this than with tooling and all that large scale industrial stuff... we would love to try making seating too!! good luck Anthony!

Hi Anthony, it's a good idea. I think you can also design this product as a library chair for people to use. Recommend it to the school, I think there will be a good harvest

We quite agree Lixin, the education sector has interesting application potential.

Hey Kevin and Anthony,

This looks like a good idea and congratulations on the research you have done. I have a couple of questions

1. Is there any specific value of using Nike Grind materials to build seats or is it same as any EVA material?
2. Were you able to do any experiments with the material, if so, what were the learnings?
3. Moreover, would you consider giving these chairs a specific shape or unique look an feel (so that it stands out from the rest of the recycle chairs)?

Team

Thanks for your comments Yasith, much appreciated!

1. RECOVER uses Nike Grind materials for the cushioning and also the seat cover. The main structure is made of sheet metal. Seats, nowadays, are made of plastic, wood or metal with a thick foam cushioning. RECOVER uses different waste materials to create seating instead of using new raw materials.

2. We were able to achieve successful experiments such as a small flat EVA sheet made of EVA scraps.

3. The Nike grind materials give a unique look and feel to the seat. In terms of shape, we are designing for simplicity, support, and comfort.
