The NIKE SHELL intention is to protect our personal computers from any harm or mistake made by us. A stylish way of protecting our most valuable information and objects, but also respecting the world by using recycled materials.

Which Nike Grind materials will your idea utilize?

  • EVA Foam Injection Scraps
  • EVA Foam Flashings
  • EVA Foam Sheets & Blocks
  • EVA Foam Components
  • Laminated EVA Foam

How specifically will these materials be incorporated into your solution?

NIKE SHELL is a sandwich, composed of three elements: -Two external laminate panels from NIKE GRIND EVA to absorb impacts and prevent exterior elements from damaging the computer inside. -A central ring that gives shape to the product and acts as a bridge between the panels. Between each element of the sandwich, a flexible contact adhesive is used to join the pieces.

Please include a visual (can be either 2D or 3D) representation/prototype of your concept. (required)

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Research & Early Testing

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

The target market is everyone that has a personal computer and wants to make a difference in the world by using recicled materials.

How will you scale your idea? Please describe in detail your plan to scale your concept.

Shell could become a system that gives response to every case that is needed in the market.

How is your idea innovative?

The idea of Shell is innovative by giving a simple solution to a everyday case, the assembly is planned so that the grind mat could be reused several times. If your Shell is damaged we could regrind it and convert it in a brand new Shell.

What inspired this idea?

Our everyday objects are really important to us, we wanted to give a simple, affordable, durable and reusable solution to a really special object that is our laptop.

Tell us about yourself and your team. What is your background and experience?

I am very suprised this idea has made it this far! i dont see any innovation here there are other ideas that should have made it through

definitely a great fan of the idea! just wondering how will this case cater for the different models of laptop sizes/shapes?
and also how well will it be heat resistant?
in addition to can, it be used for tablets? and if yes how will it protect the screen?

HI Efren. If the shell can be designed in multiple colors, it may be more popular

Hello Lixin Li,
Thank you so much for the idea. Yes maybe separate the colors and offer different kinds of options.

The idea of the different colours will definitely be appealing!
i had another suggestion, which could increase your profit and serve a broader market, and my question is would you consider using the same method and technology to create a case not only for laptops but maybe for phones and watch bands also?
Nike has partnered with Apple in producing Apple watchs, would you consider taking this opportunity to create sustainable Nike bands for the watches and that way be in partnership with both Nike and Apple?
and also the same for phone cases? would you consider the partnership with Apple to produce sustainable Nike cases for their phones?
this could open up many opportunities for your business as Nike is already in partnership with Apple.

I really like the idea and i think you have hit a good point, however i am wondering about a few things questions, what would be a realistic price you're looking at setting for your product?
will it be at a competition with other similar products in the market?
if its too expensive are you considering undergoing a partnership with other businesses within the same field?

Based on your response to question "How is your idea innovative?" are you suggesting that your case will have a warranty program?

Sorry for not answering before, we were really committed to finishing the prototype.
We cannot upload more information but I will try to explain the plan briefly.

All fabricated shells are designed to be 100% circular in nature. The fabrication process is ´¼éexible enough that old shells can be re-milled and then recycled into new protective shells for other clients. One possible way to facilitate this circular process would entail the following customer/product journey:
1. All cases are fabricated with a serial number and pre-paid return label to ship the product back to the SHELL factory.
2. When a user no longer needs their shell, they should avoid putting this product in the trash! Instead, they should take it to the nearest post office with their serial number and postage label to mail it back (without cost to the user).
3. This material will then be reintegrated in the fabrication process for new cases.
4. When a user returns a case, they are awarded a credit (points, or perhaps dollars) proportional to the weight of the material returned, which they can then use towards the purchase of additional protective shells.

You have a great idea for keeping the circular process. Based on what you are saying it makes the most sense to me that if the customer damages their SHELL and returns it to the mill, the customer would receive Nike points which could enable them to purchase a new SHELL, or another Nike product; and there will be a discounted cost to purchase another brand new SHELL once the damaged product is returned (proportional to the weight of the material). Is that what you are thinking? Good work and best of luck!

It is really a good idea!
For the point 2 that user can post it back might not convenient for the users. I have a ideas; set a recycle or return box in the Nike store, when people shopping around they can directly drop the case. That would be more easier for customer.

Hi Nora,
That could be a great idea also, having specific dropping boxes in the city so that the recollection could be easier and more effective.
Thank you very much for your idea!

Hi Team,
your idea does not just offer an actually practical alternative solution to already existing laptop cases, that usually are rather of aesthetic purpose, but also aligns perfectly with nike's claim to serve customers with active, sporty, adventurous but also urban lifestyles. It therefore addresses customer needs and fits strategically in terms of brand strategy, good job!
I wish your team the best for your further progress and success of the project!

Hi Armin,
Thank you very much for your positive feedback, we are planning to take this project to the next level and continue the process, we always approach design thinking so it will be a cycle of user feedback and making lots of prototypes so that the result comes out as you say, an aesthetic personal computer protection that aligns to different ways of living adventurous, active and urban lifestyle. It's a great idea to make it work for all kinds of personal activities. Again, thank you very much for your feedback.

I personally have had always problems with my computer protectors, basically because most of them don't do it's function, they're only there to make your computer look good, and the fact that you guys are making a project that can change that but also aesthetically pleasing makes it ten times better. Plus, as mentioned by my colleague in another message the visibility nike can have not only in sportswear but functional things like this will be great for the brand. I don't know if you guys have done this but maybe define a little bit more your target market, do a research and test out if people accept the product in the market with a prototype. I really see some interesting aspects in this ideal, keep going!

Hi Olivia! When we started this competition we evaluated the properties of the material and that is the reason of why we thought about creating a protective shell. The product that we achieved in the prototype is clean and slim but the properties of the material make the product feel really robust and protective. We are very excited for this project and after the results of this contest we are plannig to make more prototypes for research and user feedback. Thank you very much for your positive feedback and support!

I really support this idea. I think it gives a practical and useful solution. Almost everyone has a personal computer so there's plenty of people who could be interested in. This will allow Nike to enter in a new market where the target is practially the same as Nike's customers, so it will be really easy to get them. I think you should try to do it as stylish as possible because this is one of the most valuable properties of Nike.

Hello Marta, we believe that the prototype that we develop could be described as stylish, we couldn't upload the process of the prototyping, but I really hope that you could see the final product that we achieved and give us feedback.

I think the idea is great! Not only when it comes to design and circularity, but also because the customer target of the product is very close to Nike's customer target. I can definitely see Nike users with a Nike computer case made with the recirculated material of their old shoes (You already got me as a customer) and in my view this is an important factor to consider. Nice can partner with you guys and easily the 2 parties can make profit out of the idea. In the other hand, Nike also works with Apple and I see another opportunity here to further develop the concept and selling it in Apple stores not only for computers, but maybe in the future for iPads and iPhones as well.
Just some ideas here, hope that empowers you guys! Congrats :)

Hello Elena,
Thank you very much for your comments! Our intention was to create a product that not only aims for similar customers, we also wanted a product that responses to our contemporary way of life, customers are more and more demanding when it comes to buying personal objects, we believe the final design that we achieved and the circular economy that represents this product with the recycled material can make it's way to a premium product. We really hope this Idea makes it to the end so we can continue doing research and making more prototypes to finally develop an excelent case for demanding people.

Hello Efren, I was impressed by your idea and would like to make a suggestion about the case surface. As the color of leftover of Nike’s stuff varies, how about make a customization by customers? Customers could make their unique case by choosing color and decorative pattern, which maybe attracts more customers.
Hope to see your rest of this challenge.

Hello Penny,
Thank for your suggestion, I believe customization is very important and this is because every person is unique and we humans have a vast variety of tastes. So yes we should find a way to add customization and personal feelings to the Nike Shell.

Hi,
I would like to make a suggestion about making the case more secure for electronics especially with naked screens e.g:tablets, ipads etc. How about adding a supporting bar in the middle of Eva Grind Mat horizontally probably made with similar material as the middle layer of case. It will protect the naked screens from cracking while dropped or pushed against some other object while in a backpack.
Overall it's compelling idea especially utilising the leftovers of Nike's stuff.
Thanks

Hi Hamza,
Great suggestion, maybe not only one supporting bar but three or four that could add protection to the electronics and also more design details.
Thank you Hamza!

Thanks for the intro Lauren!

I like this idea and can definitely relate as I just put a fresh dent in my MacBook this week when I picked up its sleeve from the wrong side and it slid out! On that note, it might be nice to have a way to clearly indicate which side has the opening and whether it is closed or not.
I also like the use of grind for this application as the performance materials that cushion and reduce impact on our feet (EVA foam, rubber) would also do well to protect our laptops and electronics!
The texture could also look nice in this application.

I hope that’s helpful and good luck with the rest of the challenge!

Peter

Hi Efren Garcia Caraveo -- Most compelling about your electronics case idea is that cases rarely transfer from one model to the next and often the case has a short lifespan & needs replacing. I see your opportunity for circularity there, and the reduction of virgin materials. What can you share about the heat-permeability of a laptop case made from Regrind vs. first-life plastics?

Spam
Photo of Efren Garcia Caraveo
Team

Hello Chuck Dye
You are correct most personal computers differ in shapes and sizes, so that's why we will need to create a mold that could change in shape and size so that we could offer to the consumer a vast variety of cases based on the models of laptops in the market.
The average life of a personal computer is three to five years, we believe we could make a case that can last the same period of time, in addition, the product that we are offering is assembled in the most simple way possible so that when the period of use is finished we could trim the EVA grind mat and convert it in a brand new NIKE SHELL personal computer case.
We want to use EVA because of the durability, texture, and flexibility of the material, we know this material isolates temperature and if there is a laptop turned on inside the case the heat would not be able to escape unless there is a way out. That is why we are including specific perforations to the EVA grind mat, so that the heat could escape.
Thank you very much for your sincere observations.

Hi Efren Garcia Caraveo -- Thanks for your reply! I have a better understanding of the durability vs. heat transfer equation you're facing. Phone & laptop cases are often on my shopping list.

Your profile here list Architecture in your experience, and I'm working on two proposals for this challenge that involve our built environment. I'm interested in your insights on my proposals ArtWall interior surfaces for design studios & art classrooms

Hi Chuck Dye
Exactly we will have to be very careful and specific in the perforations so that the durability of the EVA grind mat doesn't get affected.
It will be my pleasure to study and comment on your proposals.
We are also interested in your insights on our proposal CAVE which is an emergency shelter that responds to the present chaos that the human is suffering.
