Mucilages exhibit wide and important applications in pharmaceutical, food and cosmetics industries, among others. The primordial attributes of these polymeric compounds are biocompatibility, inexpensive and easily available.Mucilages are classified as hydrocolloids; they are complex polymeric macromolecules of hydrocarbon nature, that due to their highly branched structure that can modify the rheology of a solution. An application of these hydrocolloids is Bio-films production, it function is to delay gases and moisture migration and also they are able to transporting aqueous solutions in order to replace traditional plastics.From a technical point of view, there are solutions for their handling however the problem is that for the proper selection of a specific process is necessary to have with the infrastructure of a collecting system, among other factors for the optimal use of containers.Our cup provides a safe option and with the less environmental impact, because it is elaborated with cellulose fibres with biopolymers covering that can be recycled by composting.

How is your concept recoverable?

With base on a covering of biopolymers, is a fact that requires less time for its biological degradation, which is preferred. On the other hand, it can be adapted for their application in conventional cellulose containers or in other case propose the elaboration of a complete system (cup, covering and cover-top) based on biopolymers.

How have you incorporated additional sustainability attributes (beyond recoverability) into your solution?

The covering based on a mucilage bio-film is an idea by itself that generates a less environmental impact for being biodegradables compounds that can be used as compose for soil. Also it considers some seeds that produce mucilage that would be benefiting the farming of the same.

What regions do you plan to address with your solution (and how will you accomplish this)?

We consider that is a global solution, due to that in several regions of the world there are crops of seed that produces mucilage (flaxseed, chia, locust bean, etc.), whereby it would be raw material available for the cup coverings elaboration. Additionally, with the composting process proposal to finish the useful life cycle of the cup and cover, the preparation of the composting process should be adapted to the regulations in force at a regional or country level.

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

Nowadays, the main target is reduce the environmental impact generated by the consumables elaboration processes, which this the companies involved with their production are focus in finding feasible alternatives in order to continue offering an efficient and alluring service to the costumers. On the other hand, costumers will have an interesting option in solid residues handling as composting.

What are the biggest challenges you are facing today? What are existing gaps in your solution?

One of the main points to consider is the scaling, since we are still in the investigation phase and preliminary tests. The required budget for perform the highest amount of possible tests in order to improve the propose prototype.

We're three friends graduated from the Biochemical Engineering major from the IPN. For this project we've the support of a professor-investigator attached to the ENCB-IPN and a student of Environmental Systems Engineering from the same university.

Counting with advisory in the missing parts of the project, we could be capable of finish it for scaling prototypes better elaborated and get the interest of the companies that could market it. In a local level, introduce a residue handling culture, decreasing the environmental impact generated.
