Idea Summary

A new fiber based cup lid made out of flax

Please include a visual (can be either 2D or 3D) representation/prototype of your concept. (required)

Flax is a natural material that's grown in cooler regions of the world. It's been both a food and textile for centuries, but recently it's been turned into new products such as particleboard and phone cases an alternatives to wood and plastic. If it's strong enough to protect our phones it's strong enough to protect our drinks.

This solution addresses which of the following:

  • Cup Lids

How is your concept recoverable?

No additional energy is needed to recover flax lids. Simply put the lid in a compost bin and nature does the rest of the work.

How have you incorporated additional sustainability attributes (beyond recoverability) into your solution?

This solution doesn't require recoverability and allows users to make very few changes to their beverage drinking habits. In fact if anything they have more options for disposal since they can treat the lid like a piece of fruit and just toss it somewhere in the dirt where the lid can decompose.

What regions do you plan to address with your solution (and how will you accomplish this)?

This product may be more expensive to produce and other applications of it are much thicker than cup lids usually are. Figuring out how to make it cost effective and engineering it to be thin enough will require more research.

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

The to-g customer will benefit from this product by having a guilt free alternative to plastic lids that they can dispose of. Rather than bringing a reusable mug to the store and then having to hold on to it for the rest of the day this product can be disposed.

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Research & Early Testing

What are the biggest challenges you are facing today? What are existing gaps in your solution?

Knowledge. Flax has only recently been used in this way and there's little known on its malleability.

  • Supply Chain

In what city are you located?

Richmond

In what country are you located?

USA

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea will support the growth of your concept.
