Idea Title

A foldable cup that will change the world!

Idea Summary

Why only few people bring tumbler for coffee, even with discount to encourage? It's simple: because tumbler is "hard" to be carried. So we created FoFoCup: a reusable, foldable and weightless tumbler.

Please include a visual (can be either 2D or 3D) representation/prototype of your concept. (required)

We found the reason that people is unwilling to bring tumbler for coffee is because regular tumbler is "hard" to be carried. So we invented FoFoCup, which is weightless, reusable, and can be folded to less than 1 cm within a second.

FoFoCup is made of Polypropylene (PP) by mold injection. So it can stand up to 120 degree Celsius. It is good for both hot and iced beverage, is both acid resistant and alkaline resistant. When it is open and ready to be used, it's hard to distinguish FoFoCup from regular paper cups. But it can re-folded more than 1,000 times when used correctly.

The concept of FoFoCup comes from ancient Chinese, who believed that the heaven is round, and the earth is square. It might be incorrect, but it makes a cup can be folded.

The idea might be simple, but it's extremely difficult to produce. The mold for injection is special, the material needs to be selected from thousands of different kind of Polypropylene (PP), the production parameter needs to be tested and tested hundreds times.

That's why it takes us more than 4 years to get FoFoCup into mass production, and so far, we are just about to reach the milestone of 100,000 FoFoCup. It's never easy to be perfect, we are still striving for it.

Oh! One more advantage of FoFoCup is that it can be recycled 100%.

Even we could have the best fiber cup that is compostable. We still need to harvest enormous fiber from the plants, and we need to build up tremendous recycling system for the fiber cups, which we don't have today. While PP is made of propylene, which is a byproduct of oil refinery. If we don't utilize it, the propylene  will be burned, and accelerate the greenhouse effect. Unless, human being can quit the rely on gasoline someday.

So why don't we utilize this "waste" to make a reusable, foldable and recyclable cup, instead of thinking a solution based on old way?

This solution addresses which of the following:

  • Hot Cup Only
  • Cold Cup Only
  • Cup Lids
  • Cup Sleeve
  • All of the Above
  • Reusable System

How is your concept recoverable?

FoFoCup can be reused for more than 1,000 times when used correctly. (The highest record we have tested is more than 9,000 times). We are improving the manufacturing process to increase the life of use. All material (cup, lid, plug, sleeve) are made of PP (except the cartridge is made of ABS). Both PP and ABS can be 100% recycled.

How have you incorporated additional sustainability attributes (beyond recoverability) into your solution?

3R of FoFoCup: Reduce, only 50 g for 20 oz. Reuse, can be re-folded for more than 1,000 times. Recycle, can be 100% recycled. Besides cycling, we can use FoFoCup cleverly as flower pot when it reached its life of service.

What regions do you plan to address with your solution (and how will you accomplish this)?

Regions to address: global. We are working with an European company who is enthusiastic about FoFoCup, and would like to distribute FoFoCup to worldwide.

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

Coffe Lover: Easy to carry to enjoy the discount for bringing reusable tumbler. Coffee Stores: Increase revenue by selling FoFoCup and reduce the waste of paper cups.

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Operating Concept / Startup

What are the biggest challenges you are facing today? What are existing gaps in your solution?

1. The production of FoFoCup is very difficult. We have changed 4 factories already. The yield rate and life of use have room to be improved. 2. Testing period has consumed too much money on re-tooling molds. Lack of funds to scale up.

Mentorship Needs (please select up to 3)

  • Engineering and Manufacturing
  • Growth and Scaling
  • Fundraising / Finance

Tell us about yourself and your team. What is your background and experience?

With 20 years in IT industry. One day, when I was looking for drinking water, I found a water dispenser, but there is no cups. I used my palm to hold water and drank. My shoes and floor were wet. Then the idea of FoFoCup comes up.

What is your legal / organizational structure? (if applicable)

Sole Proprietor

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea will support the growth of your concept.

The mold of 16 oz needs to be remade. New 12 oz with bi-functional cartridge needs funds for mold as well. Become the Top Idea can help the solution more complete, and let more people know about FoFoCup.

Hi, Lauren,

I have question regarding the Section 3 & 19 of T&C, and have submitted my question. The webinar of Nov. 10 has answered most of my concern. There is one last question before I post my contribution:

What if my idea inspired somebody and come out his/her new ideas, but the new idea might breach my IP? Does the Section 3 allows him/her to do so?
Could we have someone help to answer this?

Also, the deck of the presentation of the webinar Nov. 10, can it be sent to us as well? Like the first webinar?

Thank you, and I will post my contribution ASAP once I received the answer.

Regards, Cyc Chen

Hi Cyc Chen ,

We sent out the deck from the webinar as well as a recording with context for the legal questions. Is your question above still a concern?
