EarthVision’s patented SuStar™ bio‐solution technology creates all packaging products using “FOOD STARCH WASTE,” which is normally disposed of in landfills.

EarthVision’s patented SuStar™ bio‐solution technology creates all packaging products and Use Once Utensils using “FOOD STARCH WASTE,” which is normally disposed of in landfills. Earth Vision’s SuStar is a transformational, plant‐based technology to create products that are marine degradable, compostable and sustainable. These products degrade quickly, eliminating any concern of them polluting our waterways.

SuStar is a chemistry-based technology using extruders as reactors for low-cost starch-based manufacturing. Our patented rotary die creates biaxial sheet strength not currently seen in today’s green segments.

EarthVision provides a complete line of sustainable, biodegradable products for disposable food service needs.  

Our marine degradable/home compostable point of sale bag was certified by Vincotte three years ago and more recently BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute).

How is your concept recoverable?

Iowa State University tested our product and determined that it was 100% bio-based content per ASTM D6868. "Bio-based content" is the total percentage of organic carbon that is modern (present day) in origin. EarthVision products were also tested by the Fraunhofer Institute for Food Technology and Packaging. They were verified to exceed the DIN standard for biodegradation which requires 80% degradation in 45 days. The material degraded 87% in 39 days, the majority of which occurred in the first 12 days. The testing standard used was DIN 54900-2 procedure 3 "Examination of the biological degradation in compost by determining the carbon dioxide evolution."

How have you incorporated additional sustainability attributes (beyond recoverability) into your solution?

SuStar needs no petroleum-based liners, is 100% recyclable, biodegradable in soil or water and is home compostable. Altered at the molecular level a predetermined period for biodegradability can be pre-programmed, especially useful for Use Once Utensils, cups and water bottles, etc. SuStar returns back to H2o and starch leaving no harmful residue at the end of its life. Waste starch is cheap, plentiful and usually free. It is a waste byproduct of rice, potatoes, and the like.

What regions do you plan to address with your solution (and how will you accomplish this)?

As SuStar was designed to be used on all thermoforming machinery this makes market penetration and scaling far easier for wide-scale adoption. Our Goal is to have converted enough thermoform manufacturing facilities in the world over to our waste starch technology, to begin to make a significant reduction in the use of short-lived plastics.

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

For commercial use such as fast food outlets and restaurants, SuStar made Use Once Utensils are fully compatible with most food digestion machines. No need to separate food stuff-simply place utensils and food into the machine. Green conscious companies will benefit from reduced CO2 emissions, reduced tipping fees, transportation cost, reduced net GHG with no methane production caused by tipping at a landfill. Dried remnants are one-tenth of the original input which has been stabilized with no fermentation or pathogens. The output is a nutrient-rich soil amendment compost which most local farmers or garden centres would be only too happy to collect, thereby closing the loop on food waste.

What are the biggest challenges you are facing today? What are existing gaps in your solution?

Amongst other interested parties, SuStar has recently received interest from a fresh spring water company that wants to bottle 4 billion litres of water annually using SuStar water bottles. Funding is needed to acquire the plant and machinery. Once funding is in place we plan to turn those Letters Of Intent into contracts.

Wide-spread recognition of what we already know to be the only currently viable solution to the plastic crisis from Top Idea would be huge validation. We would aim to use any promotion from a successful application to propel and accelerate the use of SuStar to a wider manufacturing audience. Any prize winnings would go toward future development and promotion of our SuStar technologies, specifically to commercialise SuStar and provide investors and shareholders real value.

Hi Ben,
Thank you for asking. Unfortunately, EarthVision and SuStar were not selected to go through to the refinement part of the process. We are of course disappointed but there are some worthy projects chosen including one of my favourites.

As you have asked Ben, it may interest you to know that the search for SuStar (Sustainable Starch) began many years ago with The Betty and Gordon Moore Foundation, Gordon Moore, the inventor of the silicon chip and the founder of Intel Corporation faced similar obstacles with the first Intel chip. The patents were later taken over and perfected by Doug Ivey-also a very keen environmentalist and scientist/inventor who would eventually go on to perfect SuStar with Don Bittner-a renowned expert in starch twin-screw extrusion and the creator of the Cheetos snack food. Between these gifted individuals, they have been able to open up a whole new world of biotechnology resins and materials which will soon go on to benefit mankind and our incredibly fragile ecosystem in so many ways that it is not possible to articulate in this space.
