BioLogiQ is a bio-resin manufacturer that makes NuPlastiQ GP biopolymer from annually renewable plant resources. This polymer has been designed to be blended with other resins to make products that meet customer’s specific requirements. It has been proven successful blending with traditional resins such as PE, PP and PS and can be also be blended with other bio-based resins as needed or required. NuPlastiQ GP is made from materials Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for food contact applications. When blends are being developed for food applications, other food-contact approved materials are always used. Products such as cups, lids, straws and etc can be made using traditional resins but incorporating NuPlastiQ to contain bio-content. These new products can be made on existing production lines and equipment and produce products with performance characteristics nearly identical to traditional plastic products. Several of BioLogiQ’s customers have successfully demonstrated pilot scale production lots of cups, lids and straws.

How is your concept recoverable?

Products developed with NuPlastiQ are designed to be recycled in the normal recycling streams. Testing is ongoing to validate these design elements. In addition, if the product fails to be returned to a normal recycling stream, independent 3rd party testing shows that the entire product will biodegrade in environments where it is typically disposed such as landfills or industrial compost systems.

How have you incorporated additional sustainability attributes (beyond recoverability) into your solution?

BioLogiQ’s NuPlastiQ is made from annually renewable plant resources. When blended with traditional plastics, the resulting product uses less fossil-fuel-based material, thus extending the life of these resources. Often, the NuPlastiQ addition provides sufficient strength improvement that downgauging of final products is possible, further reducing traditional plastics usage. Finally, the Green House Gas generation is 4 to 5 times less than is created when making traditional plastic.

What regions do you plan to address with your solution (and how will you accomplish this)?

BioLogiQ’s NuPlastiQ BioBlend solution is applicable for nearly all regions of the world. In markets where readily available recycling exists, the products can and should be recycled. In areas where recycling is not available, the products can be designed to biodegrade with the disposal methods available in the region.

Describe your target market. Who will benefit from your product?

Both users and suppliers will benefit from these products. Retailers can promote an earth friendly solution knowing that the product they are supplying is reducing plastic waste. Customers (end users) can be confident that they are part of the solution. To date, while suppliers and retailers have completed some testing, we expect further user testing will be completed as part of the final development/go-to-market strategy. Products containing NuPlastiQ will be branded with the NuPlastiQ trademark to ensure customers of the inclusion of this earth friendly solution.

What are the biggest challenges you are facing today? What are existing gaps in your solution?

BioLogiQ’s NuPlastiQ is the first polymer that is both recyclable and biodegradable. While data has proven this concept, it is not the normal understanding in the industry. We continue to train and promote our story, but we need continued support and help to get the message out. For us, the key message is: plastic is good – we make it better.

The BioLogiQ team includes Ph.D. and Masters level scientists and engineers with chemistry, physics and manufacturing backgrounds. The R&D activities are lead by Dr. Don Allen who has over 35 years in R&D of product development.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea will support the growth of your concept.

The funds will help us expedite additional testing and development including recyclability testing and further biodegradation testing. In particular, testing in soil and marine environments needs to be complete and the results confirmed. Funds will also be used to purchase critical test equipment that is needed so we can match performance characteristics to customer requirements. We plan to test the incorporation of natural and sustainable fibers into the cups.
