In no more than 3 sentences, please tell us who your idea is designed for and how it reimagines the new life experience.

This game is designed for the expecting parents. This will prepare them for the real maternity experience and it simulates a real experience that they can learn from and challenge their friends to do the same. This actually gives the parents a chance to actually imagine how the maternity experience is going to be like.

The most beautiful experience a girl can have during their lifetime on earth is the experience of becoming a mother. It is the same for the man as well with ambitions of molding the child to being a healthy and active human being. Thus parenthood becomes a most anticipated milestone in life for any married couple.

But, how can someone prepare for this experience? Is it actually possible? However much one prepares, will it be enough? Are the new parents ready for the complexities with regards to pre, during and post pregnancy? If you ask any newly married couple they would say it is a journey. A journey they yearn to tread together and learn and adapt along the way.

Is there a way to help new parents prepare for this experience? Is there a way to simulate this journey and to educate new parents along the way?

The Design Challenge

“How Might We reduce the constant medical consultations and expose new parents to trusted content”

Through this design challenge the team tried to address the issues related to the lack of trusted sources of information, to reduce the over-reliance on consultations to get the required information as well as to simulate practical scenarios for the new parents to experience different scenarios in parenthood in order to get first hand practical experience on how to deal with different scenarios.

The Solution

Well, it is a mobile game! But it's not just another game!

The prototype of the game:

The team intends to take the new parents or parents to be on a journey with an educational experience through an interactive challenging game. The key features of the solution are as described below.

The user will be taken on a journey through pre-pregnancy, pregnancy and post-pregnancy time periods. The game journey would thus consist of milestones that can be significant stages in the experience and it will also continue to test your knowledge and give you tips. Based on the user profile the game mode and other preferences selected the user will be provided with questions or tasks to be performed along the journey. This may range from a simple trivia question related to the stage or even an activity that the user must perform in order to move on to the next stage.

Questions about the maternity/paternity experience will be thrown at the user. Once the user answers it, the game will evaluate the answer and give immediate feedback and award the user with points so that she/he can climb up the leader-board.

The questions are designed with the goal of educating the users.

Sense of achievement

By playing this game, the users will gain knowledge and gain a sense of achievement. This will help them to a safe and happy maternity/paternity experience and additionally this will create a community that can help each other.

At what stage is your idea?

  • Prototyping: I have done some small tests or experiments with prospective users to continue developing my idea.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

Provide the prototype to a set of potential users and see how they interact with it.

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

We would like to see how our game be seen in different cultural backgrounds and different age groups.

Tell us about your work experience:

We are a design team that works together in a non profit organization in Sri Lanka called "Design Think Forum".

This idea emerged from...

  • A group brainstorm

Are you an expecting, new, or experienced mom?

  • no

Are you a healthcare practitioner?

  • no

Are you a current employee of UCB Pharmaceuticals or Sutter Health?

  • no

How would you describe this idea (in 2-3 sentences) while in an elevator with someone?

This is a mobile game designed for expecting parents to learn more about what they are going to deal with in the maternity experience in a fun way.

What is the specific problem your idea is trying to solve? 1 sentence.

New parents always need support from others to take care of a child because they do not know most of the things about the maternity experience since they have not experienced it for themselves yet. Reading about it takes time and these young adults do not have time for that.

How has your idea improved or evolved throughout the Refinement Phase?

We have prototyped the game at

We tested the prototype with 3 potential users. And the feedback that we got from those 3 suggest that people will feel reluctant to play this game since it's childish to play a game and they think that it's not practical to learn via a game. We should conduct a few more user tests. May be our target market is wrong!

How do you plan to measure the impact of your idea?

Ask a set of questions related to the maternity experience from a set of people who are going to be parents soon. Evaluate the answers.
Let them play this game.
Ask a different set of questions about the maternity experience again. Evaluate the answers.
See if there's any improvement.

What are your immediate next steps after the challenge?

Try to build the game for real if the user feedback is good! Otherwise just scrap it or change it.

How is your idea different or unique from what is currently on the market?

Currently what to-be parents use to learn about the maternity experience are books and the internet. Why not have fun while you learn?

There are many awesome games. But I prefer to play games online without loading them. Usually I hang out on , this site has a huge diversity of games from shooters to puzzles. But I prefer arcade games.
