In 2010, Kiwanis International announced the ELIMINATE Project, which would raise $100M+ in efforts to eradicate maternal and neonatal tetanus from the world. This deadly disease steals the lives of 34,000+ innocent infants and women each year. Today, there are only 17 countries left that still have mothers in need of vaccines. Through a partnership with UNICEF, the ELIMINATE Project is closer than ever to reaching its goal of eliminating all MNT from the world.

What is a provocation or insight that might inspire others during this challenge?

While many of the primary donors come from a variety of sources centralized in the ELIMINATE Project and UNICEF, much of the momentum gathered has been through grassroots organizations, including Key Club International, a high school leadership organization that has pledged millions of dollars towards the campaign.

How does this research relate to our use cases and personas?

The ELIMINATE Project targets mothers and infants from under-resourced communities and highlights the power that crowdsourced and viral campaigns can have on raising awareness and money for otherwise ignored diseases. While MNT is easily curable with a single vaccine, it had been one of the many neglected illnesses in the world, causing millions of deaths each year up until the onset of the ELIMINATE Project.
