Hospital-New Parents Messaging

Parents need a credible source of information, and hospitals can provide that information through FaceBook messaging.

In no more than 3 sentences, please tell us who your idea is designed for and how it reimagines the new life experience.

My idea is designed for new parents with questions. Every parent has questions, but they may not know where to get a credible answer. FaceBook messaging can bridge this gap by allowing new parents to directly ask a hospital their question.

Babies represent a complete unknown for new parents.  Anything and everything can seem to go wrong with an infant.  A new parent will panic at anything slightly out of the norm.  First, they will ask their spouse if that is normal.  Their spouse usually has the same level of expertise (or lack thereof) as they do.  If they don't know the answer, they may make an appointment with their doctor to ask a question that could have taken a doctor ten seconds to answer.  I propose an easy solution: hospitals set up a FaceBook messaging service for new parents. Everyone would save time.  Parents would get a quick response, and doctors would be able to see more patients.

At what stage is your idea?

  • Back of the Napkin Sketch: I came up with this concept and would love support in making it come to life!

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

I could brainstorm the idea, and find out if there is any program in place already.

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

I want feedback on the usefulness of this idea, and if this idea seems possible.

Tell us about your work experience:

I am a senior undergraduate student in the Psychology department at Lehigh University. I am researching cross-cultural parental support. I have taken classes on community action research, and I am currently taking a class on healthcare reasoning and decision making.

I really like how you chose Facebook Messenger as the platform - everyone's already on Facebook and knows how to use it.

My only input is I think it'd be better to connect mothers specifically with a doula service or something like that, since a hospital has more things going on during the day than just new-life issues.

But again, I really like this idea!
