Designed for the poor and vulnerable in the community. That pregnant woman who has no awareness of prenatal screening services, who cannot access a healthcare center due to factors like long distances and affordability. This involves partnership with maternal health institutions and non profit grass root organisations serving the BOP, we make antenatal care easier by providing ultrasound services to the pregnant women thus reducing pre and post natal mortality rate by providing early diagnosis.

Kenya grabbles with under developed, under-equipped and unsophisticated facilities stretched to cater for more than they can. Currently access to such facility involves traveling long distances, incurring costly transport burdens and waiting in long queues in public hospitals that are understaffed and ill-equipped to handle vast numbers of referrals. World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 80 percent of the medical equipment in developing countries is donated. A 2011 study looked at inventory lists from 16 low-income countries and showed the number of nonfunctional medical equipment in that pool is at about 40 percent. Most donations in radiology equipment suffer from mismatched with equipment requirements or operational expertise, or it may not be maintained properly or used safely. This makes donated medical equipment unusable in underdeveloped countries. Kenya needs help in improving diagnostic medical imaging to increase healthcare delivery to its nearly 50 million citizens and the solution is not For-Profit Private Healthcare provision, because – the private sector service delivery is of negligible value compared to the demand, also people living in poverty are not the main beneficiaries of private services, and the high cost of these services also place services out of reach of those who need them most. We see that social entrepreneurship is, key to deliver better health outcomes for the bottom of the pyramid that would otherwise find it difficult to get access to quality diagnostic healthcare. Social Entrepreneurships in healthcare will protect against the impoverishing effects of illness’, with an ‘emphasis on the underserved’

We provide access to medical equipment, expertise, training, and supports organizations that provide primary care to the under served bottom of the pyramid (BOP) in society that lack access to their healthcare needs due to financial constraints. Cedars employs an innovative social entrepreneurship program; Managed Radiology Equipment and Skill Service (MRESS) this is the outsourcing of overall departmental needs, specifically equipment and technical skills required for improving clinical care, in a way that ensures management of responsibilities and functions; it’s a strategic method for improving operations and cutting expenses by placing efficiency at the heart of operations. Cedars Diagnostics providers Managed Radiology Equipment and Skills Service that in partnership installs diagnostic imaging equipment, maintain expert skills(sonographers Radiographers or Radiologists) and technical support in delivering quality diagnostic imaging to the populations served by these caregivers

In this case, we support maternal health centers serving the BOP by partnering with them and provide the equipment and skilled personnel for them to provide comprehensive pre and post natal care.

At what stage is your idea?

  • Full-scale roll-out: I have completed a pilot and analyzed the impact of that pilot on the users I am trying to reach with my idea. I am ready to expand the pilot significantly.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

We have already tested the concept. So far we have impacted 5,105 pregnant women by engaging in maternal screening and educating them on fundamental maternal issues in the urban and rural remote areas. Impacted 1,200 expectant women’s lives saved from fatal maternal conditions such as ectopic pregnancies as a result of early maternal screening. 927 children impacted as a result of early diagnosis of conditions such as heart diseases, cancer, major communicable and non communicable diseases.

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

- OpenIDEO may provide forums or networks to other organisations, accelerator programms, impact investors with the same goal. - May be of help in helping to fine tune the idea on every level so that we can be able to make a bigger social impact. - Workshop forums for us to learn more about othe organisations and how they tackle same social issues on the ground.

I am the Managing Director of a social enterprise based in Kenya who's main mission is to provide access to quality and affordable medical imaging services to the Kenya's poor.
