Phone/IVR-Based "Midwife School"

Building on the ideas so far using SMS or touch-screen applications, why not also consider an IVR equivalent to educate/train potential midwives within a community on how to diagnose and monitor signs and symptoms?

This idea seeks to address language/literacy issues with using mobile phone applications that rely on reading and texting. Creating a phone-based "midwife school" can allow women and girls to learn the basics from home -- even in a group context with sharing a single phone device and using its speaker phone feature to broadcast into a room.

The other purpose is to educate and train as many members in the community as possible on the basics of prenatal care and childbirth. It can also provide diagnostics to help someone monitor signs/symptoms and determine if an issue is escalating and will require calling for help.

What is the minimum level of mobile technology needed for this concept?

Mobile phone towers, IVR server/host, carriers, and mobile phones. And a way to charge phones / keep them operating.

How could this work in a low-literacy context?

Offer different language/dialect options to choose from and also localize for the culture's style of teaching and communication.

Which partners could help realise and deliver this solution?

  • Oxfam
  • Nokia
  • Mobile operators
  • NGOs
  • Government
  • Other - Feel free to elaborate in your description of the concept
