Big sister / big brother classes

Since many pregnant mothers already have children, it might be effective to try to get their other kids involved and educated about the health of their future little brother / sister.

We've talked a lot about educating moms, dads, and HCWs...but I think educating big brothers and big sisters could also be effective in improving maternal health. After all, we all know that kids are great at calling out their parents for things they should or shouldn't be doing!

This concept is to develop some "big sister / big brother" classes specifically for children of expecting mothers. The classes could be administered through a community education hub or as part of an after school program.

Which partners could help realise and deliver this solution?

  • Oxfam
  • NGOs
  • Government

I think mobile tech could be used w children in number of ways...games, social networking, text messages similar to the concepts of texting moms. I'm not sure how common it is for kids to have mobiles however. They would probably have to using moms phone. Another thought would be to have devices that connected kids in the same area by lo-fi or something. This would give area kids a forum for social networking...they could tweet about what they just did to help out lil brother.
