Slide Ranch and The Edible Schoolyard

Slide Ranch and the Edible Schoolyard are both wonderful teaching tools to educate school-aged children about farming, community, and how to grow and prepare food. Both are using innovative ways to use education and food to fight obesity.

Slide Ranch and the Edible Schoolyard are both wonderful teaching tools to educate school-aged children about farming, community, and how to grow and prepare food.

The Edible Schoolyard was developed on a spare acre of land in Berkeley, California and serves as an interactive garden classroom as a tool where teachers, gardeners and chefs educate students. By growing produce that changes from season to season teachers link experiences in the garden with science, geography, history and cooking lessons.

Slide Ranch is a teaching farm north of San Francisco, California in the Marin Headlands. Operated by farmers, teachers, and outdoor enthusiasts ideal outdoor venue for teaching about healthy foods, healthy living and environmental awareness. The farm uses its organic gardens and animals to teach kids where where fresh healthy food comes from, and to inspire a lifestyle that includes growing and preparing nutritious foods, getting plenty of exercise, and sustainable use of natural resources.

Hi Andrea, lovely to hear about these initiatives. I like the idea that the kids can see the area as a 'garden classroom' and no doubt get excited about seeing how their space is developing. Having a practical space where they can learn is excellent, especially as the teachers then link the experiences with other teaching topics.
