I was inspired to post this after reading a few other entries about increasing transparency and providing more information about where a product came from, who grew it/ manufactured it, and what's in it.

GoodGuide rates thousands of products in many categories (food products, apparel, pet food, body care products, etc.) and gives them a 1-10 score according to their environmental, health and social benefits. You can dig deeper to find out about the specific criteria they used for each category. For example, in some cases they compare the product or company to others in the same category and give a relative weight.

I just looked up La Brea Bakery, which makes a lovely wheat bread I like, and discovered it has a score of 2.4 out of 10. Apparently the product has a higher level of sodium than other breads so it got a low "health" score, and they got docked in the "social" category, because the company doesn't have a policy on the right of workers to organize.

Hi Jean,

The idea is great. Thanks for sharing. I believe that this could be used in combination with other applications such as Yelp to rate the restaurants' practices (maybe through an auditor of GoodGuide). Moreover, retailers looking for more transparency could also show the rating of their products on their shelves or product display cases. Please let me know what you think.
