As many of the other inspirations mentionned, showing where the food comes from is important. How about letting the producers themselves crowdsource this information, and consolidate it in a platform similar to Ushahidi?
The consumers could then see which food are produced locally. The interface could enable the viewers to get more information on each producer, have a code color according to the type of food, exactly like it's done today with the different Ushahidi's reports.

PS: As I'm typing this, I'm thinking about Sarah Bird's inspiration about the tracking technology, Arjan's food code inspiration as well as Tom's QR code idea: customers could enter the bar-code on the website to get the information accurately (instead of just typing the name where there could be homonyms).

@Mohammed: Good idea! I haven't thought of this from that angle but it could prove very useful.
