Growing your own

More and more people are taking up the challenge of growing their own food but what inspires them to do this?

For those that aren’t able to grow everything they need, they might become a “localvore” (only eating food produced within a certain radius of their home).  What about farmers and food producers who have a desire to produce sustainably and sell locally?  Are you interested in the motivations that drive these behaviours? What do people consider are the paybacks (global, local and personal) for thinking and behaving in this way?

Use your own personal experiences or those of friends and family or find information on the internet. Tell us inspiring stories of why people have made decisions to produce or consume food in a certain way.  Are there other movements or clubs that generate similar behaviours or emotions?  What could we learn from them?

Italian company Le Verdure Del Mio Orto, — (‘The Vegetables from my Garden’) bridges the gap between farmers and urban consumers by letting anyone build an organic garden right from their browser and have their produce delivered to their doorstep.

We love pop-up shops. We love the idea of growing our own food, yet we are transitory urbanites with nowhere to grow and no idea when we will be uprooting yet again. ‘Pop up’ allotments are a win-win for us growers and property owners.

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate.

A friend of mine, along with 4 other guys, spent the summer of 2010 cultivating their own food and made a documentary about it.

Gardeners sharing their passion and produce show us that growing your own food is attainable. My kitchen garden was inspired by Peter Cundall, the Mancunian who hosted *Gardening Australia*.

Create a Greenbelt/farmers market. Each stall is a tiny farm and shoppers can buy food as fresh as it can be as well as learn about how their food is produced by seeing it for themselves.

Set up a few central hobby farms in a city (several acres). Use these as nurseries to supply seeds and training for small, professionally pre-designed gardens. Use interactive mapping to coordinate neighbors to grow food, medicine, and share seeds.

Just wanted to share some of the initiatives (from Europe to America, suburban & urban) out there that are successfully matching people who want to grow food to people who have land to spare.

Growing your own food does not need to be intimidating or costly. A simple garden can be grown in a mere sack and can provide enough vegetables to offer some food security to a family who may not have the resources for something more elaborate.

Rather than providing just green space with major urban renewal projects, should developers have to deliver a percentage of productive farmland instead of just grassy plains with shade trees?

I've encountered many blogs and other readings on urban farming, but CITYPLOT actually encourages you in the growing of plant life and provides support with any queries along the way, to help connect knowledge, aspirations and communities.

Small box including necessary items for home milk processing enables consumers to make their own high-quality milk products like youghurt, cheese etc., provides interesting experience and makes them value milk and milk farming consequently.
