"Taste the difference": A festival celebrating local food.

Who doesn't love good food? Let's use our taste buds to show the community that organic, locally produced food just tastes better. Imagine restaurants throughout the city offering local food menus. Imagine people trying all sorts of interesting new combination of locally grown foods. With festival menus, food fairs, farm tours and other cool activities, a untied taste-oriented festival might just be the ticket to changing how people think about local food.

By launching a multifaceted culinary experience, we can celebrate locally sourced food, reach out to people who are unlike to already buy locally produced food, and create a fun buzz that can excite everyone.

The main attraction:
- Restaurants offer a specific menu of dishes made from locally sourced food. This is win-win as both a way to boost restaurant traffic and promote locally sourced ingredients.
- One iteration might be high-end restaurants with an affordable local menu during a set-period of time.

Other ideas:
- Get grocery stores and local markets holding taste tests: Remember the Pepsi challenge in the 90's? Let's do that with locally grown fruits and vegetables.

- Get people competing in cooking competitions.

- Publish seasonal recipes perfect for locally grown food.

- Hold trips to farms to go fruit picking or learn about growing techniques.

Hi Louise - thanks for the feedback. I think the key here is that we need to find an effective way to reach people who might not otherwise be likely to think or care about local food--not just those who are likely to already be interested.

Simplicity works, and if well executed, I think could really make a difference in how Queenslanders think about local food. It's certainly only a starting point but could cast a wide net capturing all sorts of people.

I don't believe Queensland and Brisbane have anything like this yet. They could draw inspiration from other cities doing similar things. The crux here is combining both a simple local food festival with accessible information about local food, why it is good, and where to get it.

Good point about finding an effective way to reach people. I am always put off attending the Taste Festivals because of the price of the ticket! It's not only about buying a ticket but also about paying to try the foods once you're inside. If people can share their offerings the prices could come down but it's also about promoting the producers and a PR tool for them...... How about adding an awards scheme for the innovation section (as mentioned in reply to Peters's comments)? Encourage healthy competition and collaboration (?) between the restaurants...
