Why do you want to be OpenIDEO's Visual and User Experience Designer?

I think the experience would open up infinite possibilities for both me and OpenIDEO. Also it will give me the chance to work with genuine people and make good impact through design.

How many years of experience do you have?

  • More than 5 years of experience

How did you hear about this challenge?

From Jason and Luisa by email

What did you learn when developing the deliverables in response to the design brief?

In the short amount of time I was able to spend on this project, I learned especially about the vast potential and importance of OpenIDEO and its initiatives. I’ve been able to grasp the big picture, which has helped me to start shaping OpenIDEO as a brand, and from that I could design potential experiences in a system that engages people from across the globe, in any language.

Using a “back-to-basics” approach, my aim is to engage communities and encourage closer dialogues between people so they can collaborate on solutions to global challenges. A campaign across different digital and physical touchpoints, along with outreach on social media and face-to-face programs, we can make communities aware of the benefits and importance of “diversity and inclusion”, and enable and empower them to design and share their potential solutions.

To make it happen, we need first Attract a community that wants to make positive change, then we Engage them with a variety of social and collaborative programs, and finally we Enable these passionate people through OpenIDEO’s platform.

Deployed at strategic touchpoints and through various mediums, the plan is to address all the challenges we see facing OpenIDEO today. Posters put up throughout a city, along with physical installations, will begin the Attract phase. Interactive workshops facilitated by people we might consider “Ambassadors” or “Community Managers”, would commence in the Engage phase. The Enable phase would live on OpenIDEO’s website, with support from an innovative, visual, collaborative platform.

The design system and messaging have a strong influence from public manifestation. The latin word “Manifest” means “to make it visible’, and that’s what we are trying to achieve; reveal our intents to make an immediate impact on the audience. Through the design and messaging, we are communicating a strong, positive idea, or a new perspective: taking a negative concept of Manifestation and flipping it to be more open-minded and inclusive.

To make sure the communication would be consistent, I’ve developed a series of lock-ups that include call-to-action lines, the brand, and a short description to introduce a specific initiative. The system can easily be applied across all media: here are some examples and applications, demonstrating the use of the headlines, typefaces and lockups.

Attracting

To promote an open global challenge where people can share ideas, they must first be aware of OpenIDEO and its initiatives. We would create physical messaging in the form of posters and billboards, as well as take advantage of digital social channels such as Youtube and Instagram.

The messaging of the campaign will not just be talking about the importance of diversity and inclusion, but will also promote OpenIDEO as an organization that encourages creativity to solve problems through its digital platform.

Engaging

In order to engage the audience, I’ve developed two types of initial physical touchpoints. One would be a creative hub installation where the community can meet each other and share ideas. Our “Ambassador” could run workshops there that allow others to observe and take part in a challenge that is currently on-going, or just take home a postcard from our “on the wall display” with messaging and call-to-action for specific challenges.

We also would have a “message in a box” installation, which will be made with recycled cardboard boxes that contain engaging messages and real problems inside – both solutions was thought to be cheap and achievable ways to engage people at any place.

Enabling

After Attracting people by creating the physical and digital awareness and Engaging them with community workshops and installations, we need to make sure the online touchpoint to Enable them will be an easy and useful tool that helps participants to be more creative and motivated to create a solution.

To achieve that, we have to move beyond the traditional interface of a website. The online platform was rethought to be an intuitive whiteboard toolkit that allows users to create journeys, mockups, write down ideas and leave feedback in response to other colleagues’ input. We will allow people to choose a challenge and start designing their own process freely and with the feedback of experienced peers.

By making people aware of OpenIDEO and engaging with them on basic and creative initiatives, we can change their mindset and make it easy, fun and rewarding to participate and change the world for the better. Giving them the right tools and framework, asking the right questions and most importantly, bringing their ideas to life, we will make the world a more inclusive place.

Great visuals, very compelling and beautiful. I wonder how you will integrate the steps and create a hierarchy of actions with clear messages on what to do, and when. Maybe it’s because I can’t read the wireframe text very well, you may have done this. I think public posters invoking curiosity is good, with a more clear step on how to engage when it will be awesome!

Hi Virginia! Thank you for your message here. End of challenge and people still engaging and asking questions, so interesting :)

Actually this his is a great point. The stage we would define messages, timming and target would be in the planning phase. As the brief wasn't that broad, I couldn't specify anything rather than a compelling concept and it's possible applications.

I hope I could answer your question.
Have a great week!

Wow, I'm incredibly impressed with how much effort and thought you put into the project!! Your prototype website looks great, and I think the wording/statements you use in your marketing/branding examples do align with going "back to basics" but with really powerful words. Great work!

Hi Amanda! Thanks for your feedback, made my day :) I think that was my first thought when I started this project, trying to first use design to consolidate OpenIDEO as a brand. I think by doing that, and being more consistent, the messages and call to actions (regardless of the challenge) will be more powerful and more recognized by people. Thanks again!

Hi Vini,
Great work and brilliant ideas. I am amazed at how you express ideas through interesting pictures. You are very good at it. I think, without words, people will understand what message you want to convey through your drawing.

Hi Eldy, thanks a lot for your feedback. It was an extensive design exercise with passion on top of it. As designers, we know how important is to make our thinking visual. :)

Great work, liked how you had a "bigger picture vision" to tackle the briefing.

Thanks for leaving your note. My understanding of experience design goes beyond than just designing user workflows or improving an interface. As designers, we should think the whole experience, from a potential user getting to know the platform until the moment we enable these users to post an idea into the platform and getting feedbacks. The secret to great platform work is a deep understanding of the user’s context, no matter the channel.

This is a wonderful approach. I really like the ambassador idea, and using a mix of digital and physical campaigns.

Hi Carlye, thanks for the comment. Yes, I believe if happen a better engagement between OpenIDEO and other ambassadors (or facilitators), we can bring people from different places and backgrounds together. People with a vast potential to solve certain problems, simply don't know about the platform and it's purpose; so they don't access the website. So maybe the solution isn't just investing time and energy redesigning the website, or suggesting new colours for "Call to Action buttons" of the current platform. It will not effectively solve the problem.

Let me know your thoughts on that. After seeing some of the projects, it made me confuse. :)

I really like you use of typography! Also the placement of images in public spaces makes a compelling picture!

Hey, Kelsey :) thanks for your feedback. I think this is a good approach to create and own an identity system for OpenIDEO. Also, a strong point is that the simplicity of the messaging could make easier for us translating the system and the types (condensed and serif) to other languages and communicate abroad :)
