I sought to visually communicate that this challenge is about community, and coming together to foster dialogue between people from all over the world. With this information, I thought about which visuals would symbolize the essence of feeling connected regardless of location. An image of the world is an icon for unity. I strove to make this world spark curiosity and convey a sense of comradery, giving users a fun and cheerful feeling, and leaving them interested in discovering more. Design involves far more than simply conducting research and testing. Humans are not purely rational; they act on emotion. A skilled designer must have the intuition to create for human emotion.
I learned that the best way to execute this abstract idea is to look at several different interactive maps for inspiration. Airbnb achieved a fun interactive map leaving viewers with the desire to discover more. I drew inspiration from them to create a similar pleasant feel of interactive discovery, but with OpenIDEO branding.
In my execution, I found that the best way to communicate my idea was to tell a story through animation. In order to really grasp my vision, the world had to be moving, and encourage fun interaction.
