My submission is intended to inspire participation by highlighting the diversity of the already active community.

I imagined a landing page that felt familiar and encouraged users to click on "PARTICIPATE". The pinned planet emphasizes the global network that is the OpenIDEO community, and the monochromatic images represent the commonality of the human experience. Users can also choose to minimize the intro-section by clicking on "Featured Stories" to explore the biographies of OpenIDEO community members.
While the "PARTICIPATE" CTA is still a prominent feature on this page, users now have an opportunity explore the biographies of other OpenIDEO members, specifically those willing to share a short narrative. Hovering over an image will entice interaction by remove the monochromatic layer and adding a drop shadow.
Clicking on an image will bring to the foreground a snapshot of the member's biography and display their location. Users can click anywhere in the overlay to return to the previous view or can click on "Read More" to head to the member's profile page.
I reimagined the community section of the site as an opportunity for community members to share their stories and read about others. Additionally, the page indicates a messaging functionality that would encourage users to reach out to strangers, build new relationships, or nurture existing ones through conversation.
I created a survey to get some quick qualitative insights into how people perceive the concepts of "diversity" and "inclusion." I quickly learned although there are clear similarities, there are also clear differences in the way people describe diversity and/or inclusion. The responses of one particular participant challenged my expectations about what people would say. This lead me to try think more inclusively when creating content for my submission.

Why do you want to be OpenIDEO's Visual and User Experience Designer?
First and foremost, I believe in openIDEO's mission. Although I've been following openIDEO for years, I've been a passive observer up to this point. Although my design experience has centered around commercial healthcare products, I've been looking for the opportunity to design for communities. I'm looking for my next role and I'd love to get involved in supporting this active global community and building the platform to activate it's energy.
How many years of experience do you have?
Less than 3 years of experience
How did you hear about this challenge?
On the OpenIDEO site.
What did you learn when developing the deliverables in response to the design brief?
As with many of my projects, I started this one by sending out a survey through social media to ask people about how they perceived "Diversity" and "Inclusion." One respondent who is deaf had a different understanding of the word "Inclusion" that my non-deaf respondents. I was reminded that community can be defined by many different things.
