The Global Inclusion Challenge is a movement that encourages participants to practice inclusion by asking them to think about who they might be excluding. The web interface runs machine learning algorithms to identify other participants nearby who are working on similar issues and can offer a diverse perspective to lead to innovation.

Why do you want to be OpenIDEO's Visual and User Experience Designer?

Upon moving to the Bay Area two years ago, I immersed myself in Stanford d.school coursework where I learned how to tackle complex challenges by using design thinking. I interacted with IDEO designers at the d.school and at IDEO in San Francisco where I was able to build my design thinking mindsets through workshops and challenges. I would like to be a visual and UX designer at IDEO so can co-design with like minded people and infect others with design thinking!

How many years of experience do you have?

  • Between 3 - 5 years of experience

How did you hear about this challenge?

I took the "Design for Inclusion" pop-out class hosted Emma Scripps from IDEO and Ariel Raz from the Stanford d.school. After that class, I came across OpenIDEO and began following the challenges.

What did you learn when developing the deliverables in response to the design brief?

Through developing the deliverables for this challenge, I became more in tune with my contexts to think about who I might be excluding in my designs and/or daily activities. Through the process of learning about inclusion, I began to see it more as an action we can all practice, and not as an outcome or a by-product. Overall, I feel that practicing inclusion with people of diverse perspectives in proximity to our daily activities and routines can lead to more psychological safety and equity.
